Default X Pipe Install - Check Engine Light

MY 89 auto. Having an X pipe installed - mechanic indicated that the "check engine" light would probably stay on since we are taking the cats off and all the plumbing with it. Is this the case - is there something that can be done so this does not happen or is the mechanic misinformed. Appreciate any help on this issue. Thanks.

As long as he reinstalls your O2 sensor into the bung on the X pipe, all will be well.

your mechanic is misinformed, he is missing something. Did he take the handbrake off to see the light go away?

Right, but not in 89, just to be clear. Started in 91 USA/Canada cars.

Stick the mechanics head by the tail pipe after the install while you mash the gas. Then say, I didnt see/hear no check engine light haha.

I've put an x-pipe w/o cats on an '87 S4 and '93 GTS, no lights in the dash on either.

We don't have lights; just that one that looks like a belt on 2 pulleys with 'belt tension' written next to it that is supposed to put the fear of God into you.

X pipe installed along with all air pump, cats and assorted plumbing removed. Car sounds a bit deeper but not really louder. Can't really tell if it runs stronger at this point but will figure it out in a few weeks. Car ran great before.
