Default Borla & 928 Motorsports radiator/fan done!

Took a long time with a few issues, but it's all finally done and WOW what a sound! I took it on a short drive around the neighborhood and my wife said she could hear me clearly all the way. Sounds fantastic, exactly what I wanted. A little "wake up the neighbors" but not too obnoxious. It sounds very nice from inside the car, not really loud at all but apparently it's a bit louder from the outside. She said I set off someone's alarm.

The radiator and fan went well, just ran into a few little things. Yes the lower radiator mounts have to be trimmed a little for it to fit properly, and I had a couple minor issues with the fan harness. But overall a nice installation and hopefully my cooling issues are solved.

I see you have the Y-pipe and the Borla. I'm getting ready to take the plunge into these upgrades. Which do you think is best to do first, the Y-pipe or the exhaust? I'm still trying to decide between the Borla and the 928 motorsports set up. I know you got your Borla off Ebay for a good price. Did you consider the 928 Motorsports exhaust? Or did you plan to go Borla all the way regardless of the Ebay deal? Thanks for any advice and experience you might share.

I planned to go Borla all the way after hearing a couple, just loved the way they sound. I installed the y-pipe first, then got the Borla. Personally the y-pipe plus the factory muffler sounds a little harsh and tinny to me. I've heard Borlas with the factory cat in place and they are definitely more mellow but still don't have that ripping sound I wanted. Getting both is phenomenal, fantastic sound. The only thing that would make it better are headers.

Was there a reason you went with the Y-pipe first then? Did you notice any performance gains?

On my '81 OB I just replaced the last bit of muffler with a tip... Light, nice sounding and it was pretty easy for the shop I use to do. I think the tip cost like $125 and they welded it in place for another $75 or $100 something like that. Nice chrome tip...nothing to write home about but it sounds pretty nice and looks WAY better than stock.

Stock does look bad, but I was thinking of the weight loss bonus more then just looks. My muffler is getting worn out looking anyway. Darn OCD kicking in
Has anyone done a single exit pipe 2.5"-3"

Actually I was in the middle of ordering a bunch of stuff from Roger last year and bought it as just one more thing. The cat actually is the biggest muffler on the car and with the y-pipe, you get a much more aggressive sound. Problem is, the factory muffler isn't very good at handling the result, so then the Borla became required. At least that's what I told my wife...who by the way said it sounds hot!

Mark, nice job!

All you need now is the EuroS motor sitting next to my beer fridge!

Mark,
I have been researching electric fans and the one you have fitted does not seem to fit the shroud. So only pulling air inside the diameter of the fan. How is the cooling performance?

Now you need some MSDS Headers. They would really wake your car up!

I know I know. This new radiator put a little crimp in my engine plans, but I am still planning on it!

It is smaller than the one Carl shows in his instructions, was a little surprised when I got it mounted up. But it's actually about the same diameter as the stock belt driven fan. I do have a couple questions for Carl, but he's a little busy at the moment. I'll be giving him a call later in the week about the fan and a couple other things. So far I have no issues with the cooling, but I really haven't run it hard yet. It's also been record-breaking cool weather here the last couple days, just gorgeous, so it hasn't had to work very hard yet.

[edit] I should mention that the fan body is fully top-to-bottom on the radiator, so I'm not sure a larger one is possible. The only way would be to run something like DR's dual fan setup.
