Default THANKS, Landseer, for the tip on this 1985 928! - Latest Acquisition w/pics

I wanted to thank Landseer (Chris) for his posting back in November 2008 about a nice 1985 for sale on the Richmond, VA Craigslist. I normally don't search Craigslist for 928s so I would have never found out about this one without his post - and a follow up PM. THANKS Chris!!

I must admit I was not really sure what I was looking for and there were so many good choices on the market over the last 6-9 months (e.g., Brian's Sharky, Bluemaxx, another Brian's '89 5-speed in Oregon, this one, etc.) I couldn't resist the insanity and I decided I needed one more nice 928 for ME - just to keep up with my wife!

Long story short, I looked at several and this Iris Blue '85 in Maidens/Goochland/Richmond VA resonated with me and my wife. We both liked the color combination and the low mileage - although, I knew the engine and engine bay were not fanatically cared for so an engine refresh (i.e., hoses, gaskets, paint, polish, etc.) would be planned in the near future.

We closed the deal in May and I drove my truck from California to Maryland in the beginning of June, conducted a couple weeks of work there then drove back to California with the new shark in tow on a U-haul trailer. I really would have liked to stop and visit/meet some Rennlisters on the way, but time was not on my side. In fact, on the trip back home, I left Maidens, VA at 6:30am on Friday morning and arrived in Ridgecrest, CA at 1:00am on Sunday morning. I plan to make another cross country trip in the near future in one of the 928s and won't be as pressed for time - it would be great to make some stops along the way!

So here's the scoop on the car. 1985, Auto, Iris Blue/Tan interior, 12.8K miles, 3-owner car (original owner sold it in 2007), next 2 owners had it considerably shorter. Service records - serviced regularly, converted to R-134 (I'll probably change it back to R-12), Cam cover gasket set in 2006. I believe I saw a receipt for timing belt change but no WP change out. Everything works but tires are cracked from age and need to be replaced. Purchase price: $13.9K (for those of you keeping track of what 928s are going for these days).

Here are some pics. Getting loaded up here and prepped for the long haul. I had used the "saran wrap" type of wrapping when I transported Idaho and it worked GREAT. However, on this trip I decided to only cover the front of the car with the wrap - since it would be the most vulnerable to damage. However, after about 100 miles, it was flapping around the mirrors and windows so I removed it and left the bras on. In order for the wrap to work as well as on Idaho, I should have double wrapped the WHOLE car. Lesson Learned.

When I saw the writing on this minivan, I instantly thought of one of our Rennlister's avatar - can you guess who?? This was in either VA or TN, I believe.

Engine and compartment. I'm looking forward to doing the refresh and get to know the '85 better and ensure it's a reliable driver.

Took all these pictures I day I brought it home so didn't have time to clean it up. Top priority was to get it into short-term storage, out of the sun, until I can get to it.

Interesting Start Procedure sticker on the ashtray cover. Looks factory but had not seen one of these before.

It does seem to have a slightly high idle so I won't be surprised if I find an intake vacuum leak

Since we purchased this car in Virginia and we already have a car named Virginia, we were struggling with what to name the newest addition. I suggested Maidens (after the town we bought her) but my wife liked "Iris" best. But wasn't this supposed to be MY car?? So, you guessed it, she liked the car so much, she wants it! I'm OK with that as long as I get another one! So we're calling it hers and naming it "Iris". She's actually doing very well at rotating her sharks - gives them all regular time on the road.

We're both very happy with the car. THANKS again, Chris for the lead on this one!

Very nice Dwayne!

My '85 auto also had the start procedure sticker on the ashtray cover. You can't see the detail of it in this pic, but its there. I always thought it was cool as you don't see to many 928's with it, seems like for the ones that came with it, that they are removed.

That is a nice looking car.

With such a sweet fleet, what kind of storage do you have?

Amazing car...

You have three cars that are too nice to drive. That one is definitely one of them! Unfortunately, I fear that the desert heat will kill the interior in no time...

Wow. The sickness has taken a strong hold on this one.

Very nice example and great starting point. No doubt this will be a show quality car in no time.

Nice aquisition Dwayne.
Nice color combo too.

That car won the jack pot when you bought her.
Can't wait to see how she will look after you put your magician hands on her!

She will look and run at her best for sure.
