Here is a pic of the VIN tag and paint code tag.

VDS determines whether the car is ROW or Euro. A VDS starting with `Z` [ZZZ or ZZZZ] is a Euro. All others are ROW. From what I understand, the VDS code was meant to further describe specific features or destinations of ROW models. I've been looking for further information on how to decode these, but have come up short.

Dash VIN is definitelly wrong. Its very likely from January 2007 build BMW E92 328i Coupe.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=PK49741

VIN's begining with WBA are all BMW's. Though most of their Motorsport department made cars have VIN which starts VBS. Including some non M cars like E31 850 CSi.

WPOAA2923MS810413 is correct VIN for late '91 MY US model 928 made in late spring or early summer 1991.

VDS determines what safety equipment car has. Its madatory in US model VIN's. ROW 928 do not use it at all and thus they always have ZZZ in 4-6 digits of the VIN.

Possible US model VDS codes are:
Code:
'81-82 JA0
'83-90 JB0
'90 JB2
'91-95 AA2
Only two '90 MY cars have JB0 as only two US model were done without airbags. All other have JB2. 2 in JB2 and AA2 mean 2 airbags.

This should not be confuced with US model VIN stamped into body under front fender. It also has ZZZ in it as at the time when body was made it wasn't known what safety equipment like 3 point seatbelts for rear seats and airbags would be installed into it down the production line. Despite this it was already known for which market car would be made, ROW or US. This allowed Porsche to stamp body with different 13th digit for VIN. Actual number used for ROW and US model changed over the years. All used variations can be found in this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...in-thread.html

For VIN decoder purposes 13th digit is only sure way of checking if car is ROW or US model. Using above VIN as example:
WPOAA2923MS810413 = Official US model '91 VIN which should be used in all vehicle papers
WPOZZZ92ZMS810413 = Stamping on body below front fender on above ...MS810413 VIN car.
WPOZZZ92ZMS800413 = Totally different car than above. ROW model '91 S4 or GT made much earlier diring '91 MY. Most likely made already in fall 1990.

ROW = Euro model. There isn't any difference from VIN point of view or in general. All ROW cars were build for some specific country requlations as any kind of single EU type approval didn't exist at the time. This means Cxx country code option tells what kind of standard equipment was installed into each car. For example C13 Finnish country option cars had 3 point rear seatbelts years before cars for many other markets.

Basically all ROW cars shared one single sequence for most model years. Exceptions are '80-82 MY 4.5L vs 4.7L S models which both had their own sequence and '88 MY S4 and Club Sport which both had their own. '85-88 Japanise cars were part of the normal ROW VIN sequence but they had their own number are reserved at the top of the range strating from 9561. In '78-79 MY Japanise cars were part of the US VIN sequence with their own allocation starting from 9501 ('78) and 9511 ('79).

Thanks Vilhuer. The paint shop sent me many pics of the car to include several of the different VIN tags they found. I suspect when they were sorting pics later they came across the pic of a close up, similar in color, BMW and thought that was mine as well.... hence the odd number

Just checked that VIN (WBAWV13537PK49741) on one of the free VIN check websites..... Good call Vilhuer, it is from a 2007 BMW 328i. That clears up a lot and gets rid of the minor worry that something strage was going on.

Default 1983 S manual options decode

Good afternoon,

I'm getting ready to list my '83 manual S on BaT and wondered if anyone had a way to get the option codes and details via a VIN. VinAnalytics used to do it for free, and I'm happy to pay the $12.99 for the report but figured I'd reach out on the forum first.

Thank you all!
John

Hi John-

Post the VIN in this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...hread-155.html

I can see what I can find out for your VIN.
