Hey Zoltan,

I haven't installed the MAF splitter portion of this mod, so I haven't run it yet (hopefully tonight).

Because there will be a few variables that are different I'm not sure I'll be able to attribute any noticeable gains or losses to any one factor. (if my MAF splitter doesn't flow right it may offset any gains from getting cold air from in front of the radiator, or vice versa)

I do plan to take it to the dyno and compare my setup to stock in a month or two.

I'm also running an LM-1 data logger and I'm monitoring the MAF voltage which *I think* is directly proportional to the amount of air flowing in, so I think that might let me know if it's flowing the same as stock, more or less. I think I can also monitor the airbox temp, so if the air is any colder I *may* be able to see that.

I'm hoping for gains, but if it's exactly the same but looks cooler I'll be OK with that.

Will post more pics and results though either way...

Mike, nice work! Please post your findins. I'd also be interested in the initial feel while your driving. does it seem to rev easier? Feel like its freed up a bottleneck? This would be a worthwhile mod to me even if dyno numbers do not show improvement. Thanks for the great effort here!

Thanks Ben,
No problem. I doubt I'll be able to feel anything, I've already got the crossovers, Ken's chips, 55psi FPR and 4 degrees of advanced timing on each cam. My 5-speed already jumps up pretty well when I step on it. I will definitely post the results either way though.

Thanks Ed, It will definitely be in by this weekend, so you'll see it on the 19th. I was hoping to finish up a few interior bits I've been working on before anyone else saw the car but for me the engine always comes first.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Looks better on your car than mine!
The dual K/N filters will flow more than the stock paper and you probably will see more HP just because of the split to the MAF.
When I monitored "heat soak" temperatures the intake air at the filters remained at ambient air (A/C off), but after 20 min the intake tubing became heat soaked and would not cool off when the car was restarted and driven. Not a problem with an N/A engine maybe even desirable in winter months.

Might be a good idea to KEEP the MAF screen to smooth out air turbulence (some of the S/C experience. I guess when we go back to Bigdaddy dyno w/o screen and with.

Hey Tony,

Thanks I appreciate it. For right now I don't have the electric fan installed (my AC doesn't work anyway) and the temps are fine. I really like the idea of getting the air from down in front of the rad instead of from on top. I agree my car probably doesn't generate anywhere near as much heat under the hood as your SC-ed car does either.

I'm keeping both MAF screens in for now, if for no other reason than my peace of mind. The next trip to BigDaddy's will be interesting, I've got a few combinations I want to check out.

Can't wait to get home tonight and try out my new MAF splitter with this air filter setup.

Will post pics. Please be kind everyone, the MAF splitter is my design, the snorkel I just adapted.

Here it is:

And Ken, I got the chip today and put it (back) in. Thank you. The car is a freakin' monster!

I don't think the splitter and snorkel are restricting anything. I just took the car to my favorite closed course and tried a 'hard start'.

I paced it off afterward and the first patch is 12 paces long, then the second one goes from 15 to 18 paces. That one was 2nd gear!!! (I was in ROTC in high school so my paces are almost exactly 36 inches, you do the math). My tires still have about 5/8" of tread on them and I could never spin them on dry pavement before.

Me likey!!!

Just sad that all those "options" are expensive as hell.

I meant the 928 Specialists' Blackbird or the Kuhn Performance snorkel.

Doesn't seam to be a nice and cheap way to get rid of the lunchbox.

Ah, yeah that's true. If this thread is any indication there seems to be some interest, maybe one of the vendors would like to offer a group buy?

Good work Mike, Im gonna be sticking with my RadCov'r for some time as I don't really see much ever coming up for the S3 that is both cost effective and right off the shelf (I have A/C etc...) but I really like the look of the lunchbox replacement.

Greg, your gonna love the fuel chip, the mid range torque (where most driving is done) is extremely fun. Its almost like a kid poking you to open it up all the time! good stuff!

Your '85 is lookin pretty damn nice also. I was also thinking about the RadCov'r. I want to do one "upgrade" at a time to get the full effect of the mod. And from what you and Mike report I am looking forward to the chips.
What would we '85 '86ers do with out Porken?
