Default Snorkel Intake for my '85!

Well it's almost ready. I got a snorkel intake from Tony (Toofast928, thanks Tony) a couple of months ago and I've been trying to get it to fit properly and work with my idea for a MAF splitter.

The Snorkel intake is designed and built by Kuhn Performance and it's supposed to be for the S4s. Tony had modified an S4 upper fan shroud to work with his application and I began with that.

The original setup was too long and was hitting the hood when it was closed. It was also not quite sealed around the ends of the tubes. I cut off about 3/8", modified the upper shroud, and added a spacer to make sure the tubes don't collapse, then I added some sealer and screws in order to make it air tight. The shortened tubes clear the hood also.

What do you think?

Nice. Did you replace the original air cleaner housing?

Thanks,

That's the goal. That piece is still not quite ready, hopefully I'll get it in tomorrow night and I'll post pics then. I had to come in and get away from the Jersey mosquitoes, I think I'm about 2 quarts low on blood already.

Plus the soccer game is on.

Check this thread tomorrow night for pics of that part...

If you lived here I could help you with that, I work for the worlds largest mosquito control district.
We have 6 C-47's, 6 Bell 206 Jet Rangers, 14 Huey's and two 407's and a couple dozen spray trucks.

Yeah, that sounds like a fair fight. It'd probably be a toss up for the first few weeks though. I've lived in south Florida and in south Jersey. I'm not sure which is worse.

That looks very well done. Do you think something like that will work on an OB?
Is there the same space at the front to do it? What did you do to the air box?
Thanks, John

By the way the Mosquito is our state bird!! North Dakota

Thanks!

For the purpose of measurements, my car is an OB, so it would fit.

I had some conversations with Herr Kuhn and he offered some brackets and suggestions, but I decided to try it this way.

It took me quite a while to get it to be secure, air tight, and also look halfway decent. I don't know if you can see it, but I stuck the air tubes through the upper shroud and then used a heat gun to expand them and then fit them over the snorkel ends. Then I cut off a little off the snorkel ends in order to fit it and angle it slightly so it would clear the headlight bar (by 1/4"), and also be low enough to clear the hood when it's closed. It also had to be secure enough to hang from the shroud without bouncing around.

I also had to bend down the front lip of my radiator in order for both tubes to lay flat, and extend the radiator overflow line.

I have some progress pics if anyone is interested.

The new airbox replacement splitter is a secret. Hopefully I'll post pics tomorrow.

And thanks Tuomo! Kuhn Performance should get the praise for the design and execution, I just tried not to ruin it with my OB adaptation.

He's missing the most vital piece of equipment. Flamethrowers.

So....some of the parts can be purch. from Kuhn and then moded?
I am going to do something with the air intake when I do the Y pipe and headers. Just not sure what?
The blackbird is NICE but $$ dictates this mod.
Thanks,
John

That's right.

I wanted to get rid of the stock 'lunchbox' but was undecided between three different options:
1: The 928 Specialists' Blackbird (not an option for the OBs)

2: Kuhn Performance snorkel (Wasn't built for the OBs, but could be modded) and

3: The 928MS air filter-on-the-radiator setup. (which I think is great and would work, but it only has one tube going back and I wanted a balanced pair)

Then Tony put his snorkel up for sale used and it was the right price.

Brand new the snorkel setup is pretty pricey because I think they still have to hand-make every one, but I think it's the only option that can be (relatively inexpensively) modded to fit an OB.
