Default GTS Carpet mystery

So Afshin started a nice thread about leather refinishing, and I go to check the color code on the seats in the GTS to see if I can find a match. I have the build sheet on the GTS, with the interior data as follows.

Interior Trim: MT
Interior Trim: Lthtt/Lthr Seat-Lt Grey/Black
Interior Equipment Code: KL Leatherette
Seat Combination Number: AQL
Seat Cushion Material: LED Leather
Seat Side Support Material: LE Leather
Seat Back Material: LE Leather
Carpet Color Code: 6YR

I then started poking around in PET. carpet color code 6YR is light gray, available from '91 to '93 only. My seats are light gray, but my carpet is all dark blue- It's the same weight, pile, and binding as the Sliverknit in the GT, so I ASSume it's factory carpeting. Midnight blue carpet (code 3GE) was only available in '94 and '95.

I was talking to Paul Champagne and mentioned my tri-color car, he said he'd never seen a three-color scheme from the factory. The e-brake handle is blue too.

So assuming the build sheet is correct and the car came with light gray seats and carpet, why the heck would someone replace all the light gray carpet with dark blue carpet in my car? I even have midnight blue factory floor mats. I've got all the receipts from 1994 on, no mention of interior work other than a receipt for re-spraying the seats in 2006.

Weird! (Though I like the dark blue carpets better than I would have liked light gray, so no big deal.

Here's the interior, the day I bought the car, showing all three colors:

My previous 928 GT was supposed to be all black inside, but had classic grey supple lethal seats and carpet.

People are messing with stuff all the time. Maybe your gray carpet got dirty, and the owner decided to go dark, so you don't see every speck of dirt on it.

Well, they did a good job (except where the carpet's letting go on the driver's door. Gotta figure out how to glue that....

For re-gluing the carpet on the door I've used 3M general trim adhesive with good results, be sure to follow the directions on the bottle precisely though.

Rob,
I agree w Nichole and Matt. As nichole says, carpet pretty easy to replace and 6YR color(Think thats pretty light gray IIRC) was probably pretty thrashed. So may have been replaced w the darker color.
Can't see from pics but looks like your dash, etc are black and tops of doors are blue???

As Matt said, pretty easy to reglue the door carpet w 3M spray adhesive. Just did this on my pass door last week when I had the door panel off to put sound deadening on that door. Took all of about 2 minutes to fix the carpet.

Hows the motor coming??

+2 on the 3M Adhesive, worked well on the small patch of carpet which pulled away with my vacuum cleaner.

The color combo is nice and whoever did it definitely paid attention to the details if they went to the extent of redoing the brake handle.

Gotta go try that 3M spray stuff I have.
My carpet is running away from the driver's door sill.

Hope you survive your seats Nicole.

I agree with the others but sometimes new owners don't like the color and change them. My wife was after me for a year or so to change the carpet to black. The tan was never a first choice, but with black floor mats it is fine so I have kept it original. Ironically it makes it more unique to keep it stock and I am glad I did.

Rob--

That lower door carpet is a target for shoe dirt, and in my light (cashmere) color the dirt and pile seem to be easy victims. So when I had the door panel off for door stop replacement, I pulled the carpet off carefully, and put it in the washing machine on extra-gentle cycle with a low-dose detergent to get it clean. And more importantly, to get all the resude of PO's carpet cleaner out so the pile would look un-matted again. When doing this, I stop the machine before spin cycle and carefully place the carpet around the washer drum so it will spin flat, then let the machine do the work of getting it all rinsed well.

To reinstall the carpet, I used 3M 90 spray adhesive (don't waste time in a dark SoCal car with 77), and followed the directions on the can. Spray film coats on both the carpet and the panel, and let them dry to film tack. Then use waxed paper as a pull sheet between the parts to allow perfect placement. carefully pull the wax paper out a little toward the bottom of the panel so you can set the top edge well. After you are happy with that, withdraw the wax paper a little at a time as you press the carpet into place with no ripples or bubbles. Be very carefull not to pull on or stretch the carpet too much as you press it into place. Tension added now risks pull-back later if there's even a partial adhesive failure.

If your car ends up here for a clinic, we can do all this pretty easily. I have a dedicated man-projects-only washing machine in the garage. The adhesive and wax paper are in the far left drawer on the bottom.

This car has a giant blingy stereo in/on the rear deck that I will most likely tear out. I'm missing the rear deck carpet and will order one up. This involves some dangerous assumptions:

1) The blue carpet in the car is Sliverknit in a factory color
2) That color is either Marine blue or Midnight blue.

Based on the limited color palette shown for sliverknit at Pelican:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ercarpet-G.htm

I think my carpeting (shown in my and Anthony's posts above) is Marine blue.

Here's another GTS with a Marine Blue interior - these look the same to y'all? They do to me, but am looking for a reality check.

I suppose I could buy another color rear carpet/pad and dye it, but in my hands that sounds like A) a big ole mess and B) a recipe for mismatched carpeting......

I wasn't sure of my carpet color and mailed Rob Budd a 1x1 inch square. He has the Sliverknit swatches to compare it to ....

Find a discrete spot and snip one strand of carpet and send it to your source for the new carpet.
