If you took I10 -> I8 to San Diego you will see a few more sand dunes - but probably could shave a little time off your trip & reduce the total amount of desert driving then drive up the coast to LA from SD ... It sure is a long way whatever you do...
Glad someone is buying this unique car - I can't believe it took this long to sell.

I tremble to think about I-10 and the sand in Arizona and California before Blythe. My 928 had been almost pristine in the front until one trip across I-10 after the Florida Parade. Then it appeared sand blasted. I would put a bra or some 3M protective film on the car before doing that trip.

Well, I know I am a noob here with non-running 928, but if you plan on stopping in Santa Monica, please let me know (PM) and we could meet up for snacks and drinks. I could also recommend places to stop for you guys, but it looks like you already have a packed trip.

I never experienced any sandblasting effect crossing the Calif/Nevada desert, but I discovered that Death Valley is teaming with life....of the insect variety....and the hood of my white 928 was covered in their little dead bodies. What in heavens name do those creatures eat out there?....sand? Most routes are relatively safe. My son and I took along a rented satellite phone just in case. We never needed to use it.

If you aren't using a bra (on the car - no suggestions for you, unless your SO likes oil) spray the front of the car with Pam before hitting the bugs. Makes clean-up much easier.

Great idea on the spray cooking oil for the car, but you have gotten my mind racing as to the possibilities for when I get home. I can think of all kinds of scenarios with that.

Got a problem with bugs accumulating at home where the bra should be? Needs more than a simple spray-on non-stick solution I'm thinking. Oh, and don't use the Olive Oil Pam. It makes the sheets smell funny. Makes you wonder how Popeye got through all those years...

You guys are a riot! I would never have thought of Pam; we're still using the old Crisco Shortening. Looks great on a tan and doesn't wash off in the pool.
