Default Work Completed

It has taken a bit but We finally got all the suspension work done. Replaced the front springs and shocks and got the car corner balanced. The ride height is about .6 inches low at all four corners. Replaced the tires front and rear with Kumhos 255/40 17 for the fronts and 295/35 17 on the rear. The rears just barely fit with out rolling the fenders and have about .5 inches clearance to the trailing arms. I am running rims with 60 mm of offset at all four corners. I think I have reached the tire width limit for my car. The 295/35 tire has a height of 25.1 inches as compared to a 225/50 16 at 24.7 inches. It is as close to the OEM tire height as is possible for a super wide tire on a 928. The spring adjusters at the rear had to have 8 turns on the to level out the car due to the shorter sidewall on the 295/35 compared to the 285/40 tires I replaced. Had it alligned but it was very close to start with, only the right front was off, and that was due to the sagging spring on that corner.

A couple of pics of the car now with the springs replaced and the new tires.

How wide are your rear wheels? Your sidewalls kind of look tapered in or maybe it is the pic. Mine are 275 and look the opposite!

I run the same wheel at all four corners, they are 9.5" wide but flange to flange they measure almost 10.75 inches. It is jut the pic that gives the look of angle. In reality the tire is only about 6 mm beyond the rim. Just a slight bulge in the middle, the tread with is fully contained between the rim flanges. My real concern is the fronts where the tire is 255 mm wide. It is a little narrow for the rim the flange is the out beind the rim protector on the tire. You can see it in the pohotos. Have to be very cautious near curbs to avoid wheel rash. The wheels were are ROH SEKTA and I got them from Group A wheels, they are in New York. I paid like 600 for the four of them. I thinks they still carry them in a polished finish. I bought them because they had the same offset as the factory Clubsport wheels. Felt keeping with a factory offset is worth it.

Those are very nice looking wheels. Group A does not show them anymore. Nothing quite that cheap.

9.5" with 60 offset in front - That's tight!

EDIT: I found the wheels via their search in two Corvette packages. Those should be the same bolt pattern.:

Looks great!

Hope that is what you were going for is looks.

I say that because when I was looking for wider rubber my local club racing tire/wheel guy says anything wider than a 285 on a 10 inch rim will cause the center of the tire to bulge and have less traction than a 275 on the same rim. When I last replaced my tires on 8f 10r I went from 225/285 to 235/275. The car went from well balanced to pushing like crazy. I am at the rim width upper limit for the 235 and right on for the 275. The rears have a LOT more grip even though they are narrower. The fronts have less even though they are wider.

I live in Williston and get to th Stowe are quite often. There are several restaurants in the area I like

KEV

I went to the Skyyear sharkfin antenna when my power antenna died. Note the filled left quarter where the stock antenna was located. At the time I purchased the antenna it was available only as an AM/FM antenna. I think it is now available with Satalite Radio now. The cost was not to high. I did not bother trying to relocate the stock antenna lead I simply mad and new lead and fished it back to the new antenna. As to performance it is hard to say with all the mountians here in VT obstructing things it is hard to tell. But it works for me.

RKD,

The over width of the rim is important but several other factors come into play. The car weighs slightly less than 3300 lbs and with me and a full load of fuel there is close to a 900 lbs load per tire which flattens the contact pach. At 34 lbs of air in the rears there is no way that the contact patch is crowned. For any tire size at constant air pressure and constant weights the contact patch would be the same in area. What changes is the shape of the contact patch. As width goes up the contact patch gers wider and shorter and when width goes down it gets longer and narrower. The advantage of a wide short patch is the it is more stable a contact, squirming less. A wider front front tire does not have an adverse impact on grip. I doubt that the racers would go to all of the effort to put 305's and larger on the front of thier cars if they were to lessen grip. After I went wide on the front I noticed a much sharper turn in. and braking performance was much enhanced. As weight shift under braking increases the load on the front tires. The looks were not the reason for my tire sizes performance was. Since the Euro S cars are traction limited on the narrow rubber of a 225/50 16 this tire combo for the rear picks up traction without the negative impact of a taller tire on the overall gear ratio. Taller tires have an negative impact on acceleration.
