Greg,
I recently upgraded the stereo in my GTS. I wanted a nice amp shelf in the rear that worked with the factory interior and that could very easily be removed.
The finished product filled the bill nicely. The spare tire is still in the car and accessible.

So, I took my first long trip today with the new stereo. Everyone told me that the power in the head unit wouldn't be enough, and they were right. The system has NO ***** at all. Wimpy and wambly.
But at least I have tunes! I found that I really enjoyed driving the car more, not hearing all the noises that it makes that I find so annoying. I found myself "feeling" the car more. As much fun as I've ever had driving a 928.

Greg, when SITM came around, I had already yanked the speakers in preparation for an interior swap. Normally, I wouldn't have contemplated a 3.5 hour drive (each way) without tunes... but I was pleasantly surprised.
Windows down, listening to that V8 through my custom RMB was sweet! It was even better when the sound reverberated off the mountain walls going through the twisties!
My '88 only had 8 factory speakers... now with the '91 interior I will have 10 (plus sub; 2-3 amps; CD changer). I wonder after the no-tunes experience if I will ever get back into music again!

I wish all the noises and harshness didn't botther me so much. I get obsessed with it and it really brings me down. Between the pinging from my engine, and the bumpy roads up here in Maine, I feel like every little drive in the car is doing damage to it, and I haven't enjoyed driving my GTS much because of this. At 130mph I can hardly hear myself talk, there's so much noise in the 928, and the ride is so rough it's just not comfortable a lot of the time. I much prefer the refinement and comfort of my Audi S8.
But it was different with the stereo in my car, I was paying much less attention to the bad stuff and a having a lot more fun with the good.
If it ever dies, I'm going to figure out a way to hang it on a wall in my shop. The real reason I own a 928 today is because of the beauty of the design. I appreciate it as a piece of art, like someone owning a beautiful painting.

Well Greg, your car is getting to be 16-17 years old now... some of the noise and harshness could be attributed to that.
When I got my '88, I drove it around with the stock equipment for a couple of months. There were little squeaks and unknown little thumps in the then 18-year equipment. Then, I had been bitten by the bug. I replaced the steering rack; refreshed the tranny; replaced the suspension with Bilstein/Eibachs; replaced the brakes with the GTS upgrade and drilled rotors; replaced the wheels & tires.
The stock muffler was already gone with the standard RMB in place when I got the car... but the custom RMB has a throatier sound to it. Oh, when I bought it I drove it over 20 hours back home with no tunes. I forgot about that!
So now, the ride is much better and those annoying little metallic squeaks & pings are gone. But, tunes are a necessity though and they will make their return to my '88 soon
BTW, just because you have a killer audio system does not mean you have to abuse it. Rap, Rock & Roll, Pop music doesn't have to be played through it... you may be surprised how Mozart, Vivaldi & Bach sound through a multi-speaker system with amps and a subwoofer! It's amazing!
