OK, my update to the thread.
I never called the seller. I was pretty sure that if I did go see the car and it was as nice as the pictures showed it to be, I would start negotiating and the next thing you know, I've got myself another Porsche.
Problem is, you see, I've already got one. And I decided this weekend that one Porsche is extravagant but two is just being pretentious. Now, don't be offended if you have two (or more) cars, I'm just telling you how I would feel, personally, with two newer cars. If one was older, a classic, a antique, something like that, then I feel that I could get away with it. And I don't drive my 911 as often as I'd like, largely because I'm not all that crazy about commuting to work in it (I totalled my M5 last year on the way to work (not my fault) and it brings to mind how little people pay attention when driving) and so I fear that the second (third) car would end up sitting more than I'd like it to.
But hey, one of these days...
Anyway, thanks all for the great advice and comments. I shall continue to lurk here, as this forum is much more active than the 996 forum.

I know this is late to the party, but I bought my LHD '88 S4 sight unseen, as a Japanese import - it was so cheap that I figured I could part it and make a profit if it turned out to be a lemon.
Naively, I assumed that I had to get a professional workshop to do the ADR compliancing work (think federalisation), and since it was already at the shop I thus spent FAR more than I had to on TB, WP, etc.
The whole process - buy, import, preventative maintenance catch-up, new tyres, cost me about AUD$13K, with similar cars (but RHD) advertised here in Oz for $30k+.
In the year or so after that, I drove it EVERY DAY, and it let me down ONCE, with a blown fuel pump fuse which took me less than 10 minutes to diagnose and replace (including Internet time to get the fuse chart from www.928gt.com).
Other than that it cost me NOTHING except fuel (and even the fuel consumption wasn't much greater than my 944S2) .

Hmmm, I woulda thought that a Japanese car would have been RHD.

+928 on all the comments here trying to talk you into getting one. For a first 928, I would suggest finding a well maintained higher milage one that you wouldn't be afraid to use as a daily driver. These cars love to be driven and often have less problems than those that have been garage queens their whole lives.
Keeping up a well maintained 928 really isn't that expensive. It is trying to revive a car with a lot of defered maintainance that can be a wallet killer. So, don't be afaid. Get a good car, not a perfect one, and drive the snot out of it.
