Foolishly contemplating a 928. Pricing?
I have had three 911s, a 964, 993 and currently a 996 cab. For some stupid reason, I was on autotrader and ran across this car, local to me, 1991 with 60K miles, 928 GT, black/black and he's asking $26,900. That sound awfully high to me, as KBB lists that car for 14K, but when cars this rare get that old, I figure you can probably throw the pricing book out the window.
I'm afraid to go look at it because I may really like it and it's my birthday soon...
So I'm not afraid of owning an older Porsche; I can do a lot of the maintenance and light repair work myself, it's only the parts costs that scare me. And I don't want to overpay, in case I do come to my senses down the road and decide to sell it. I'm not parting with the 996 anytime soon as the boss really likes it as do her two boys. Actually, I've already promised it to the youngest - he gets it when "I'm too old to drive".
Any 928 I buy would have to have a manual transmission, and I probably would drive it only a couple thousand miles a year, if that.
Thoughts, suggestions, advice, warnings?

Go for it, it's a decision you won't regret.

That is probably all the money given the current economic climate....still is a lot of car for the money if all original and documented. You have to expect to spend $2,000-$3,000 a year keeping it in top running condition depending on what it needs and how much you wish to do yourself.

You might get suckered into SITM if you get the 928.
1st weekend meet in the western mountains of NC.
You'll have a great time.
GT's may command a premium as they've got a slightly warmer cam.
5 speed.
Shorter final ratio.

Ask here and I'm sure someone will know a good place to get a full PPI on the car so you'll get what you're willing to pay for.

The car looks exceptionally clean and in very good condition, with low milage for a 91. Seller claims he has all the documentation to support the maintenance. It is certainly worth a look and test drive. As others have said, once your in a 928 you'll never regret it.

A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay you for it right now. If you're on the fence, get a PPI, take a look at it and offer what it's worth to you.
You can lurk on here for a while and find a GTG in your area. Go meet the local 928ers and see if you like one that's not for sale. That's going to show you what to really expect.
Also, this place is your best resource for all things 928. If you've got an issue, you'll find someone on here who's handled it and is willing to help out with advice, pictures and moral support.

That looks like a very nice example of a GT, kind of strange no engine pics though.
Some things to consider:
The later model's are 32v with an interference engine, so if your timing belt breaks, you may be in for a high dollar repair. The 32v owners can confirm, but I think the rule is change the belt every 30K.
Also later model S4,GT and GTS are a bit more difficult to wrench on and have more areas that need attention then the early model 16v cars, also worth noting that the 16v cars happen to be non-interference motors.
Although the downside is the 16v cars have notably less performance, unless you can find a Euro version. But the 16v cars are much easier to work on and have fewer things that can go wrong.
I think either way you will be very pleased with the level of comfort in any 928.
Good luck with the purchase, but I might advise to keep the options open and maybe consider a car that is listed here on RL by a member/user that has been sorted and maintained.

buyers checklist is in the FAQ at the top of the page, read the whole thing B4 you go buy a 928 , once you have this info then you can possibly save a lot of time and money , good luck on your quest

I speak from my own experience. I've owned many 911's including a 993, great cars but when it comes to 928's you'll change your mind!

DON'T DO IT! Look what happened to me! I bought my first one and in the next 13 years 8 more! Still have 7 of the damn things! ALL of mine are VERY NICE too! I send them all to a specialist to work on and I bet I have not spent $1500/year average on the whole fleet... In fact I am SURE I have not. Keep in mind I have so many that none of them get driven very much so that certainly helps and I don't DD any of them, so if they are down I can pick another or wait. All have been to the track at least once (except Blue82 and AO84...Blue82 won't go, and just have not had a chance with the '84 yet).
928's are GREAT cars! I like 911's too, but man they just can't compare. Now, a 996 Cab...that is another story! I would LOVE to have a 996/997 Cab and/or 996./997 TT!
