Damn Leslie, that sucks... as others have said, cars can be replaced; people can't. So at least you're okay. Since you can't remember exactly what happened or why you crashed there's a good chance you have some level of concussion. You should get checked out by a doctor if you haven't already, and take it easy on your noggin for a while (no jarring sports etc) so you don't get 2nd impact syndrome which is very dangerous. I'm sure you'll be back in your own shark in no time.

Leslie, I'm sorry about the car but happy you're OK. If you don't remember the accident it seems logical to me you should go see a doc, maybe you sustained injury. About the skid mark:

1) the mark shows all the way back you were either not in the left lane completely or moving into or out of it
2) you recall moving the car a few feet after the accident. Looking at the mark, if that is correct, you moved the car pretty far, because the skid mark is consistent along its length ... there is no skid-stop-skid and there is no skid-stop-snoskid.

This means you either recall wrong, that you didn't manage to move the car after the collision, or you did move it but a very long distance, at which point the skid marks tell us very little. I also see an aluminium strip across the tyre, meaning maybe you did in fact move the car a long way after the collision.

Leslie, unless the LF wheel was locked up and you dragged it -your car did not move from the point of impact. The skids stopped where the impact occurred. You may have tried to steer the car away from the other one while you were sliding.

Little bits will come back to you slowly. You have been through a traumatic event. Your thoughts and memories are a bit scrambled right now. Once you are calm enough, your recollections will start to reassemble themselves in proper order.

Dave makes a good point here -and hopefully one that was not lost on the investigating officer. If at the point of impact, you hit the RR of the other vehicle -then I believe it would be clear that they were sitting still while hugging the yellow center line... as if waiting to make a left turn. If they didn't have their signal on and were coasting while waiting for an opening -the brake lights would not have been on either. You would have never known their intentions to turn.

As an afterthought... hopefully you did not refuse EMT treatment. As shaken up as people get after an event like this, it is common to just say "No, I'm fine" and wander off. A concussion is a very real possibility with an impact like this. I hope and pray nothing serious will surface as the days go by and you end up being 100% okay.

Definitely get the police report and see what the other driver's statements are... you may still have a case against them (and gather any witnesses you can too!).

Kevin agrees that I must have moved the car rather farther than 3 feet. I do, too, after reexamining the pictures. At the time, it really didn't feel as though I had moved it far, so perhaps my 3 foot estimate is a tad shy. The car was still running after I stopped, and it DID move under its own power, I am sure of that. Slowly, and begrudgingly, but it did move. I thought the affected wheel was just dragging at that point, but cannot swear to it, as I wasn't watching it.

I appreciate everyone giving their opions about what they see in the pictures, especially those with any training in such things. I will have something to work with now, and in any future legal proceedings.

I did refuse treatment. I didn't feel as though I needed it, since I had no obvious external injuries. I figured I'd be feeling it the next day or so, but we're currently without medical insurance since I lost my job last year, so I wagered I could live through that pain. I didn't want to incur the additional pain of any expenses that weren't strictly necessary, with moving expenses currently straining the budget already.

I was wearing my seatbelt, and didn't impact the steering wheel. Neck and shoulders are definitely sore. But I don't have, and never did have, a headache or anything like that. No big deal. I'll get over that. I'm more upset about what happened to Pandora right now.

The SUV's left rear damaged at all?
Specifically did the bulbs get hit.

If they're running old school incandescent signal bulbs. Brake light on would show with fused brake bulb element. (that's what they said on TV. not sure if that's true)
But with unbroken left signal bulb, hard to tell if left turn signal was on.
This is Joisey. I've seen people just stop in the left lane to do a left turn.
Probably no traffic cameras at accident location so no video of what happened.

The Chevy Omni that hit me in Elmwood Park many years ago didn't even try to stop as I was turning left to get gas at the gas station. 1/2 block from the EP police station.

Hope you're feeling better. I never got medical check and my shoulders are still wierd.

That looks like it was a hard hit, and the car kept you from being hurt.
If 928TT has no doubt that it can be fixed, I am sure that it can be.
If you need any parts, let us know and we will do what we can.

Glad you are ok.

Leslie - I'm no doc, but from all that you have posted, you may have blacked out before the crash! I'd see a doc pronto, and forget about the car for the time being!

I was wondering this too. Its a little disconcerting that you have no memory of the incident. Something medically significant could have happened before or during the crash to cause that. I would say see a doctor pronto.

Hope everything works out in your favor.

Hope you still feel OK today. Unless you think you might have blacked out or had a seizure or something, don't worry too much about what happened. People make mistakes. Even good people and good drivers. All it takes is a moments distraction while another driver does something unexpected. As so many have said, the main thing is that neither you or anybody else seem to have been seriously injured. The car can be saved or not. It will be up to you. Worst case you change the chassis. Last I heard 928 world wide has several straight chassis. If he is out of them he will likely soon have more. It's actually not that major of a deal to change the whole chassis. Less of a deal, for example, than dropping an S4 motor into a S2 car and boosting it. Might be cheaper and easier to replace the car, depending mostly on the position it holds in your heart. Don't regret just having liability. If you have gone that way for more than 3 to 5 years you will likeley come out money ahead even if the car is totaled.

Cheapest route:

Pull the broken parts off, take car to a frame straightener, get some used replacements and put them on, then let a pro paint to blend it to existing color. Like new again.

Definately fixable in my opinion, but its a matter of time, money and insurances.

Glad your okay, but don't drive the porsche if you think you are going to black out, better to park and sleep it off.

If you weren't hurt and weren't blotto and really can't remember it and there's a blank between AOK and WTF Just Happened? you might need to get to a doc.

Hope you're OK. It's only a car.

Very sorry to hear about this Leslie. Do have a health checkup if a definite reason for the accident isn't found.

Hey Leslie , as others have pointed out here if your memory is blank then you may have had a momentary lapse of attention.
How have you been feeling otherwise?
Where you talking on the phone?
Checking your makeup?
Can you remember anything that you were doing just before you got out of the car??

Another point about this is that the 84 Euro does not have ABS I wonder if that might have helped.
I know from driving my 84 Euro that it was rather easy to lock the front brakes and then the car would go straight no matter how far the wheels were turned, this was sometimes discerning as I was wondering if the car was going to stop in time.

I hope that you are OK and your memory comes back

Stan,
That's what happened to me in my old '80. When I saw the truck in front of me, I slammed on the brakes and just skated into the side of the truck.

I was going 35mph and had less than 25 feet to stop.

Actually the damage to mine was very similar to Leslie's.

I was amazed at how solid the car felt on impact. No doubt Porsche did extensive crash safety testing.

Leslie,
Is it possible you fell asleep, or fell into driving hypnosis?
