Default Gas cap leak

My gas cap leaks around the lock. A full tank + left hard cornering leads to a fuel leak through the cap.

I disassembled the mecanism. Is it normal not to find any seal between the lock barrel and the cap structure?

Anybody can provide a picture of the inside of a good working fuel cap? Maybe mine misses a part.

Thanks.

Michel.

You sure it's leaking through the cap? The inner white part of the gas cap is solid (unless you have a crack in it) and seals onto the filler neck, so there is no need for a seal between that and the red outer cover and lock mechanism.

There is a vent tube in the filler neck isn't there? Part of the gas vapor recovery system I think it comes off the side of the filler neck a few inches down from the cap. If it is broken it could leak under those conditions I bet...

Sorry about the late reply...busy week for me!

Vent and filler neck are ok. I took the cap off, poured gas in it and it leaks through the locking mecanism. I took it appart (separated the red part from the white part) and noticed there is a thin space between the lock barrel and the white plastic piece. I thought I may be missing some kind of o ring. Nothing else appear damaged. I've put a temporary piece of duct tape on the inner end of the locking mecanism. Leak stopped. I'll just replace it.

Does it need the original or a generic cap is just fine?

Thanks.

Michel.

Good luck finding a generic. The white plastic piece should seal the neck by itself, as Bill says. If not, it's time for a replacement.

Not cheap, but half the price of new. It's tricky to do, but you can remove the red outer sleeve and swap the key tumbler so it can use your key.
