I have an RMB I bought 10 years ago, forget from who, stainless. Its offset is wrong. the longer tube is too straight, so it won't fit right. So ... compare your RMB to your stock exhaust first.

The S4/GT and GTS models have manifolds, cats, intermediate resonators and a rear muffler.

Much testing has proven that replacing the cat section with a x-pipe (with or without modern cats) provides a substantial power gain. If your car is fitted with the larger resonators fitting a RMB with a x-pipe may provide reasonable noise/rumble levels but with the smaller resonators you may find the loudness extreme especially above 4k rpm and on long distance drives.

I experimented with various rear mufflers and RMB with a x-pipe and the smaller resonators and found the twin piped GT rear muffler provided the best solution (the stock S4 rear muffler to quiet, the RMB to loud).......again IMO.

I have GT resonators with an Xpipe and the stock motor. Would the RMB be really loud. I don't want the drone on the highway.

Eric,
Talk to Ed who owned the car before you did. (Here in DFW) IIRC, he always said the setup with the RMB was too loud for him. When I do the X-pipe on the GTS, I'm guessing it's going to be just right. Jim and Roger here have the larger resonators (obviously on GTS), RMB, and X-pipe w cats. Sounds perfect!! Some (including myself) feel the same setup w the smaller resonators sound too loud.

Is there a list of what year model cars have the large or small resonators installed?
I have a early 87 and plan to put a x pipe on it.

Eric-

Yes it will be really loud. Sometime fun... sometimes not. I have an RMB that I swap on and off from time to time - you're welcome to try it if you want.

I have an early 87 and it has the larger resonators... I believe I heard all 87's have the larger ones... and they say size doesn't matter???

In my 89 S4, I found that with an x-xipe, the RMB was too loud and the stock muffler was too quiet. RMB with otherwise stock S4 was just right for me in terms of sound. Believe it or not, I removed and sold the x-pipe and gave up 30 dyno-verified RWHP because I could not stand the exhaust sound with the RMB or the lack of it with the stock muffler. The x-pipe went on a local GT and sounds good with the otherwise stock GT exhaust.

I like the way mine sounds with the RMB and the cats, just a tad quite.

Does the 89 have the bigger resonators or the smaller ones?

Blown,
Seems that nearly all 87s and some early 88s have the larger resonators. Later 88s, 89-? (seem) to have the smaller resonators. There probably is not a (cut off) date as I bet they were installing whatever was sitting next to them on the line when they were installing them during production.
All GTS that I've seen have the larger resonators. (Someone correct me if I'm way off)

Again, My favorite setup is the larger resonators, RMB, and X-pipe with high flow cats. Sounds bad to the bone at full throttle, but not too loud at idle or lazy driving.

Again, that's my opinion and what the F**k do I know??

I'll say I've got the Okie RMB. Translated someone had removed the pumkin and just put a straight pipe in. A rusted one at that. I like the sound in fact it sounds nice. However the more I drive it the more I'm starting to decide it's too loud. I stomp on it often and it sounds like 900 MPH to other people. Sooner or later the sound is going to get me arrested. It really does need to be toned down. Sounds like a muscle car when I pull up. Forget hearing the motor run.

Forgot to add I have the small resonator.

I had the x-pipe w/o cats, RMB, and Flowmasters on my '87 S4 and loved the sound. However, I am from the south and I like NASCAR and cheap beer too. So for you wine drinkers out there, just leave it stock.

I plan on going to full length headers w/ the header x-pipe from 928 Motorsports this winter, so I will be selling my standard x-pipe then. It is polished stainless steel w/o cats.
