I 'm looking for a RMB? Any suggestions? Which RMB is popular or the best? I want silver tips not black. Thanks for you help!

I have and prefer the 928 Specialists stainless steel one, but it appears they no longer sell it. So, I think your only choices are:

928 Intl.

They look identical.

My 928 Specialists RMB is shaped like the black painted one. Notice the bigger tip area is longer on painted one. To my ears that povides a bit more low end rumble. If it were stainless, I'd go with that. Either RMB will wake up the exhaust note nciely without being offensively loud.

 

There have been many threads on exhaust preferences and IMO it comes to personal choice, sustained distances travelled and the origianl system your starting with.

The S4/GT and GTS models have manifolds, cats, intermediate resonators and a rear muffler.

Much testing has proven that replacing the cat section with a x-pipe (with or without modern cats) provides a substantial power gain. If your car is fitted with the larger resonators fitting a RMB with a x-pipe may provide reasonable noise/rumble levels but with the smaller resonators you may find the loudness extreme especially above 4k rpm and on long distance drives.

I experimented with various rear mufflers and RMB with a x-pipe and the smaller resonators and found the twin piped GT rear muffler provided the best solution (the stock S4 rear muffler to quiet, the RMB to loud).......again IMO.

 

I have the stainless RMB from 928 Intl. I find the sound of it combined with the X-pipe to be perfect. Nice & deep & throaty - sounds great when it first fires up. Unlike Malcolm, I don't find it too loud, but my neighbour comments that he can always tell when I start it up. He's not PO'd about it, he likes the sound, but it does catch your attention.

I digress, but am very happy with the 928 Intl RMB - the twin tips look good.

 

Do you have the larger resonators Laird?

 

I bought mine from Mufflex in New Jersey. Stainless, well made, good fit, good price.They often post them on Ebay-there's a listing now, item #140326185313.

I have a custom RMB...

After having the standard black RMB for a while and noticing the bumper cover on the inboard side got dirtier than the outboard, I got (2) 3.5" stainless tips with rolled edges. They were 12" long and I staggered them, had the muffler shop tack weld them together and fabricate the piping to match the old RMB to join up to the factory pipes. My tips were from 'Silverline', but there are other popular logo brands like Flowmaster. I got the pair from eBay. The larger diameter made a deeper tone than my other RMB -and my bumper stays cleaner.

 

The best available is from Mark at 928 Int. IIRC his the only one available and sold by resellers such as myself.

Just put the unit on my car, and while it seems a bit loud at idle, it's fine at cruise and has a great note at WOT.

 

Kelvin... here's a pic of my 928 with the custom staggered RMB. Inboard tip is extended about 1.5" from the other... it has a 911 Turbo flair to it.

That is a dead ringer for the 928 Specialists one I have. I've had it one over 9 years and the tips still shine.

I got the one on my '87 S4 from Carl at 928 Motorsports. I went with the stainless steel with polished tips. It was a perfect fit and tucked up nicely into the factory exhaust pipe recess in the bumper cover.
