Default Rapid ticking sound from engine bay

I am not very savvy with the mechanics of any car so please forgive me if this post sounds ignorant.

We recently took our 928 out of winter storage. I notice that the car is running a bit loud and 'rougher' than normal. I figured this might just be because it hasn't had a tune up yet. But what concerns me is that there is a rapid ticking noise coming from the engine bay. My worst fear is that there is a cylinder that is not firing or anything.

Any of you 928 lads know what is wrong with my car?

It could just be your fuel injectors. They make an audible ticking. Another possibility is a sticky lifter, which can happen if a car sits for a while. Drive it a while and the lifter should get oiled and quiet down. if they stick, they make a louder, clacking sound.

The injectors firing is a more rapid ticking sound than the lifter.

Put your fingers on the fuel pressure damper at the front of the engine. If you can "feel" the clicks and they match what you hear, then it's the fuel injectors. It's a normal sound.

I was thinking the fuel injectors as well.

After I put my SC on the injector ticking became much louder and scared me. If you have a stephascope ( you know, the doctor thingy) it will tell you right away. If you don't have one they are very cheap and a good tool. Habor Freight is a good sorce.
Good luck

Agree, there is ticking, clicking and clacking from the top end.

I would guess the ticking is an injector sound. It won't go away when it's warm. This is normal and goes away when you shut the hood .

Clicking: Dry lifter noise that generally goes away when warm. The more you drive your car, the more your car will like you and won't make these noises as much.

Clacking: stuck lifter that doesn't go away when warm.

For the lifter issues I'd try some Rislone in your oil. Run it in your engine for a little while with your oil (a few weeks or several hundred miles of steady driving), then drain it out and put in new oil and filter. It worked for me.

I've used Rislone with success, too. Saturday, after putting on my Porkensioner, the Denver crew and I heard a loud tapping on my car that didn't go away after ten minutes of idling. But after shutting off the car and restarting it five minutes later, it was gone. So if it is a lifter, it just may need some time for oil to get to it.

Mine did the exact same thing, tapping was coming from the pass. side... Went away after a few weeks.
Change the oil & filter....it will help.

At SITM we (Bobby Huff and I) helped a gent who had an 85/86 car also with a ticking noise at idle. Sounded like something from the passenger cam. After figuing out that it was only at idle, we determnined it was the ISV (Idle Stabalizer Valve) that was making the noise. Just another thing to put on your list; however, it's not something that needs to be replaced. The gent we helped said it had been like that for the past several years.

Thank you for all your responses.

Andrew> When you say the ISV doesn't "need" to be replaced, will it cause damage if unchecked?

No damage, the ISV only controls the amount of air flow at idle, thus producing a steady idle.

The last time I had a clicking sound I had a broken cam shaft.
