Default Rear Main Seal still leaking...........

Just replaced the rear main seal and it is still leaking. Looks like I am in for round two. I might try some RTV around the outer part of the seal.

did you push it in all the way 'til it bottomed out? If so that could be the problem. generally, it should be flush with the block surface. usually it will leak at the seal portion, not the outer block mating area.

From a previous post by GregBBRD:

We took a small file and removed the little burrs that were on the end of the crankshaft.
We then took an old piece of Scotchbrite and removed the "dirt"/old oil/debris" that was on the crankshaft, in the area where the seal actually touches. We use an "old piece" of Scotchbrite, since an old piece "sheds" less.

We then wipe out the area, carefully. This is followed by a complete rinse with your favorite spray cleaning chemical. I started using the factory high pressure grease years ago (comes in the little, expensive white tube from Porsche) on all my seals, where they touch the item being sealed.

I actually just "pack" the ridge and groove full. This pretty much eliminated any and all leaking. I seldon have seal issues, anymore....actually can't remember a seal that has leaked, lately.

Maybe the seals are better, maybe it's the grease. I have no idea. I just know that I almost never have issues, so I'll keep doing it the same way.

Incorrect.

The rear main seal goes in until it is seated. That way it is square with the crank.

Try it again after cleaning and smoothing the surfaces. Prime the seal surface with some lube. I use synthetic assembly lube.

I seriously doubt it's leaking around the outside. It's most likely the seal got nicked on the inside during installation - lube it well. And/Or there is a defect on the crank, as Rob mentions. The face should end up slightly below flush.

Also, 89+ have a channel drilled in the valley that drains any oil in the valley to an area right over the RMS and this will mimic a RMS leak if the oil filler neck gasket is bad and oil fills the valley.

Well, now I know. Ive alway heard that it should be flush with the outside, now I feel better about how Todd had put my seals in. (pushed all the way in)

Thanks,

Mk
