Default 4.5 to 5.0

Has anyone ever replaced the early 4.5 block with a later 5.0 block? If so, any performance benefits?

just curious...

Of course. Do a forum search and you should find lots of info on 5 liter hybrids (5.0 bottom end with the 4.7 top end bits).

yep, Ive done one for Scot. worked great, but its a bit of work and you need all the "good stuff" to fit on top of it.

Btw, if you are looking at this as a performance option, I would suggest you just buy a 32V car. The 5.0 hybrids usually make around 300rwhp and they are quite a bit of work. You can get that out of a healthy S4 with X-pipe or an early 32V car with some small tweaks.

I just sold my S4 and kept the low mileage 79 for it's simplicity... I still have a 91 engine lying around though and don't know what to do with it... lol

What makes the displacement difference? Piston size or crank throw?

Well, that's different. There are people who have done an engine swap, but it's definitely not trivial. Do you have the whole engine wiring harness and the EZK/LH brains along with the engine?

With the exception of the GTS, increases in displacement were gained by increasing bore. The GTS also increased the stroke.

Oh I didn't want to swap engines, I was curious if the block was the same and could be swapped. You guys did a great job answering that. thanks

+1

Few folks have done hybrids and then really tried to tune them for max benefit, compared to the multitude of folks tuning 32v's. The "Assumption" is there is more power available form the 32v engines. I'm not convinced the gap is that big.

I'm about to post a nice build up thread on mine as soon as I get to the dyno. I expect to fair a good bit better than most would give the Hybrid 16V credit for.

Also if already own a 16v 4.5 that's well sorted, changing the bottom end is MUCH cheaper than getting a 32V:

Used 5.0L block $750 tops.
Fly cutting pistons with an Isky cutter by hand - $60. Time consuming but cheap and hard to mess up.
Set of 5.0L head gaskets $75.

Cost of a well sorted 32V and PPI...??? For less I can still add Euro S heads, 90mm Q45 Throttle Body, Euro S intake spider, MSDS headers and Euro S cams with 2mm base circle reduction. That gets you well above stock GTS power.

/Case closed.

Isn't the GTS a 5.4L? Wouldn't it be possible to do a 5.4L hybrid?

Didn't I read stuff about 6.0-6.5L using 968 pistons or something like that?

I think I've seen a 6.3 or something somewhere. Is the block the same? Could someone just bore the 4.5 block and add a GTS crank?

I think that would only get you to 5 liter.
