Ed I just went and bought some new Del West 2.15" intake valves. With roughly 5% extra valve area this may help. I think your engine showed the benefits
I'll run them against the 2.10" valve and see where we come out. For comparison the S4 has valve area of 3.33 sq" with standard valves, with 968 valves it has 3.75 sq" with the 2.15 valve somewhere in the middle at 3.63" The 2.10 valve is at 3.465 sq"
Cheers Greg

Seems you all are getting to my Dad. He is the brains and motivation behind all this and I was/am simply the apprentice. We'll see what we can do about getting him down for OCIC. To be clear I am "finishing" this second version of the car as he and a fabricator friend started round 2 on this car. I would say fabrication and such are a hobby of mine with working towards professional racing my career. I will do what I can and we will see what kind of progress is made by OCIC. Cheers to all, J

I first met Bud and Jason about 25 years ago. I had a 1980 911 SC and I went to his shop for a new ring and pinion. I hung around one night while Bud finished up the work and Jason (about 9 at the time) was just goofing off waiting for his dad.

Ed,
Really enjoyed reading your posts!! I just pulled out my Excellence magazine (Aug 1990) to re read the article on Bob's car. I still remember seeing the article and buying the magazine and drooling over all the mods to his car. Looking at the pics, it has "AIR SENSOR" boxes on each side of the intake pipes.
(The intake system looks amazingly similar to DR's Blackbird design)
I also noticed that Mark (Anderson) got a lot of play in the article too. They called him the California Highwayman.
Still enjoy reading the article and ALL the 928 content that was in that issue!! I hope you can make it down to see us here in Texas!!
Take care!

Chuck,
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Yes, those were "hot wire" sensor boxes used on the later engine. I don't recall the manufacturer (CRS, senior moment) but the control box was mounted inside the driver's compartment for realtime adjustments. Bob just loved to tweak it - ALL the time. Couldn't keep from "making it better, Budsy" (his handle for me). He set it a little lean a few times warming up the water temp a bit but when it came to POWER, he would reset it back to the correct setting. I told you, he was a "techno-junkie". Pushing the envelope was in his nature - God love him. Used to drive me a little nuts but it was all in great fun.
As for the Excellence article, He told me that he repeatedly told the reporter about who did the work on his car and where it was done but somehow it didn't get into print. I was a bit miffed by that but the success of the car and putting a smile on Bob's face was more important to me. Best part of the article was the "road test" out in the desert. Love it! He did that to several of our fellow car-buff Intel engineers - gave them all "rubber legs" when it came time to get out of the car. If you'll check out the license plate frame in the picture of Bob & the car on the index page, you'll read "Bud Hart Porsche Racing". Small consolation but OK by me. We wanted to do sooooooooooo much more to the car but the untimely demise of Bob canc'ed all that. Would you believe that Cathy (Bob's widow) sold his ENTIRE kit - car, motors, trailer, spares, etc. - for only $20K? 'Bout killed me! Oh well.
This will make Jason happy - Yes, I'll be coming to the OCIC event. I've been having some medical issues this Spring but I should be able to travel by July so I'll see you all there. It'll be great to meet all of you folks and see those beautiful cars. Nothing like the sight - and sound - of a sweet 928 to make a person healthy again.
Thanks,
Ed Hart

This makes us all happy to hear. Don't push yourself too much though. Prayers were sent a long time ago.

Jim,
Wow, haven't seen the car in over 15 yrs. Looks like these pics were taken in Bob's driveway - a long time ago in a galaxy, far, far away........ Like I say, we wanted to make a lot more changes to the car but never really finished it. It was Bob's own design and adaptation from other pieces. He really liked the "square" look - like Chris Cord's IMSA Monza's from the 80's. Also, it looks like it still has the original "Petrol Blue" color. Wait 'til you see the bodywork on Jason's car - maybe he'll put up a pic of the car with full body panels - smooooooooooooooth. FYI, he has the molds for all the panels - maybe he'll produce some for other people.
Best Regards,
Ed Hart

You hit the nail on the head! He was a unique guy - possessing a dry wit, and he was a total brainiac - with a twinkle in his eye. He wasn't the most furocious race car driver but he more than made up for it in his intensity and desire to try something new.
I share your sentiments. We lost a good one.

Three Wheelin'
Great thread and story Jason and Ed. Hopefully we'll meet one day at PNW 928 event. PA is only 2 hours away and a great drive at that except for that HC bridge . Look forward to more on this project too.
