Oil filters are not all created equal. There is a good comparison of common filters here. You can find others with a bit of googling. There is no data on the Mahle, but it's OEM. The info on the page I linked above may scare you into sticking with OEM rather than trying to save a buck or two. IMHO the risk of having a cheap filter not do its job properly is not worth it.

Napa puts excellent oil filters into Napa-brand boxes. Purolators are good too. I generally get Mann filters mail-order for the 928 when I'm ordering other stuff but if I wanted one quickly I'd have no worries with those brands.
BTW that oil filter study, while interesting, is pretty old and who knows what's changed since then?

It's very hard to think of ANYTHING that has seen manufacturing quality improve over the last few years. My guess is that while the specific data offered on that page may be outdated, any changes are not changes for the better. YMMV.

OK, thanks everyone. I'm chasing an oil pressure/reading issue that developed suddenly and will be expending my spare Mahle filter this weekend. If more oil system/changing work is necessary, I'm hoping to get everything wrapped up this weekend and didn't want to wait for an oil filter shipment or pay for an overnight delivery.
I can understand the possible reluctance to put the few hundreds of miles old oil back in - it's not always easy to make certain the drained oil is uncontaminated by what you drain it into, but this doesn't affect the filter.
On the having the filters on hand issue - just do what I did - order a dozen filters from one of the favoured suppliers and you'll have enough for the next 10 years. I did this after paying $75NZ dollars for one filter from Porsche in NZ (12 Filters from DR was about $150NZ delivered to NZ) and the Porsche ***** tried to get away with putting it in a VW bag - I made them go and find a Porsche bag and helped myself to coffee while I waited.
