Part 1 -
A couple months back I purchased Kiesan's pretty well sorted 91 S4 turquoise metallic. Doc Brown did a PPI (that's Post Purchase Inspection) and addressed a few things to include installation of the Super Clamp.
It is my intention to bring the car to Kauai where. As there are no 928 resources whatsoever here the car needs to be really well sorted if it has any chance of being dependable. Besides the mechanical aspects the paint and interior need to be in excellent shape in order to stand up to the unique, harsh elements here.
It is my intention to have the paint, interior (Champagne) and engine(Doc Brown) "refreshed" before bringing the car to the island. I will document the process with notes and pics as things proceed. The first order of business is to have the car fully repainted.
From the attached pictures you will notice the original paint looks pretty good. Upon closer inspection there are several places where the clearcoat and basecoat have been compromised. That is a paint death sentence in Hawaii. The warm climate, salt air, bright sun and heavy rain can blister a car's finish in short order.
I spent some time getting estimates and interviewing prospective paint shops. In the end I chose not the least expensive but the shop that represented the best value in terms of knowledge of 928s and cost. In this I chose McKenna Collision Center in Downey, California. For those in the Southern California area McKenna is a mega car dealership brand relative to European performance and luxury brands (Porsche, Audi, MB, Rover, etc.). McKenna Collision Center is the body/paint shop for these dealers.
Doc Brown introduced me to Ron Ruff of McKenna CC who spent considerable time looking over the car and compiling a comprehensive estimate to include some custom fabrication work. Ron and Doc Brown spent time together as part of a Porsche racing team in years past.
So some things to be done at the time of the repaint - add painted GTS wing, thanks Alan, GTS mirrors and delete side trim moldings. Additionally, I an having new GTS rear quarter panels grafted on the car.
Before pics of the car.... looks good at 20 feet, as well as work in progress....
Part 2 - June 12/09
Have added additional detail pictures of the welding points for the grafted on GTS hips. Also added pictures of paint stripping process and paint prep process.
Front fenders and hood have had the paint chemically stripped. Other areas are being primed and block sanded.
"Refresh" will also include a new windshield (old one was beginning to de-laminate and fog, new front bumper (too many repairs on the exising one) as well as GTS painted rear wing and side mirrors. All rubber, seals and trim will be new as well.

Did you only have to remove the factory welds to install the GTS quarter? Or did you have to cut into the body and add new welds? Who did you buy the quarters from?

I'm very, very interested in those quarters... I'm very curious how much cutting/welding and of course, body filler.... is required... I just saw a set on 928 specialist for 1,400 a side. Are these the ones you bought? they don't show a picture. I may have to order a set, but want to know more about how much body filler will be required, as I hate the stuff...

Not if he got a great deal on the S4. These days you can get a great, clean S4 for less than 10k. GTS's ares still above 25k. So, it could go either way depending on how much the S4 cost.

In the end, wouldn't it have been quicker and more cost effective to just buy a nice GTS?

OK, I was an "ordie" (the warhead type!) ordnance man about 9 years ago. That's why I asked. Those rear quarters are actually steel right? I mean the back half of the car is galvanized steel. Anyways, I like the color too, different you know.
