928 racing this weekend

I guess if you are doing all the work it MIGHT be cheaper than a 996 cup car but not by much! SERIOUSLY! To put Mark A's racer back on the track has cost me over $50k... For about $65k (today, but not by the time I finished the car up) you could have a decent 996 Cup car...with a few spare wheels and stuff probably even! To do what Mark A and Joe F have done (if you were to just buy a car and go to work on it and farm out all the work) $100k MINIMUM! Hell, their engines are $25k minimum as it is!

Hi James,
I would agree with you about getting a 928 up to their level.
Although I believe the costs of a 996/997 Cup are higher with their engine rebuilds and other upkeep items. Since Mark A. has both he can probably shed light on it.
One thing's for sure, racing is not cheap at this level!
Cheers,
Constantine

Are 928's inexpensive race cars..................NO....are any racecars inexpensive...not really, especially german ones :>) Racecars by nature are stupid expensive...its not a poor mans game by any stretch of the imagination....its just the nature of the sport...

joe and Mark have both gone through a lot of interations of their cars.
Mine and Scots are a good barometer of cost of what it takes to race a 928 sucessfully. sure, we are both down 120hp, but that is only a set of heads and the CF intake. Joes is near as fast as Marks, and mine down 150hp to Joes is only a few seconds slower now. My car could be made all day long at 18k if you do the work yourself as I have , with very little shop help as far as rack time. add a stroker, thats $4 to 10K depending on how much work you do yourself and if the pistons are new or not.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Scots is more like $15k and mine more like $25k to be replicated. Barring transmission failures, I bet those two mods would make mine pretty close to Joes right now. Thats about $4k for the intake and $4k for the larger intake valves. (968) so, call it more like about 35k for a car that can beat an older $65k cup car all day long!

awesome job in the heat! 1:42 is smoking fast by the way for those that dont know that track. The old holbert car competition are right around 1:50 range.
WC top drivers in the upgraded cars run in the 1:40-1 range in optimal conditions.
amazing its holding together! can you put some JBweld on it until the gear is found?
you have to make it to the SCCA double regional at Laguna in June! (late june)
start the process for getting you and Joe down here. the porsches from the NW are coming down 30 or so porsches, so it should be a great SCCA ITE and SP event. PLus, the turbo NSX, S2000, griggs Mustang and PTG BMW will be there. All running times you have run or better with the DOTs.

For the record, both 928 racers have a stroker built by Greg B., Mark A. has a dry sump and Joe F. has an accusump for extra oiling duties. Correct?
Any other facts such as the type of gear boxes, clutches, wheels/tires sizes and other suspension mods helpful to others trying to follow both of your formulas would be helpful. Better than spending a bunch of money needlessly. That is if you can share without giving away secrets.

We both have GT gear boxes with added cooling but stock internals
12x18 wheels front and back (both cars)
330/650/18 tires front and rear
14" rotors with F50 calipers
my car weighs about 2600 and Joe's 2700
more later

Yes I am running a dry sump system and Joseph is using an Accusump.

I was running a GTS box for many seasons but I lost 4th gear and the broken teeth damaged almost every other gear in the box. I had a GTS with a bad motor all lined up to buy to get the gear box but another Rennlister begged me not to bid on it so he could get it. I passed on the car and have regretted it ever since.
