Greg did some post-mortem (and I do mean post-mortem, now...) measurements on the crank today:
And I quote:
Quote:
Worn .040" on backside of throw. Will need to go to .060" to clean, maybe .080. Can't chrome a journal that far.
Crank is bent .008"
Would need to be welded, straightened, machined, and the mains will need to be .010 undersize to fix the "bend". Might crack when welded. When done, you will have a "used carlot" repaired crank.

I stopped by Greg's briefly on Friday, and he handed me a crankshaft in a plastic bag. I didn't recognize it and was confused for a minute till I realized that he'd sent out my dead crankshaft, and had it straightened, welded up, and had all the shrapnel damage cleaned up. All main and rod journals are within 'new' spec for a GTS crank. Looks pretty good for a used car lot crank....
Old n' busted:
2-6 journal:
The 'new' hotness:
thrust surface and 2/6 journal:
Closeups on the welded-up 2/6 journal:
And another.

Mike, I'm going to sit on it until we (and by 'we' I mean 'Greg') figure out what it's gonna take to fix this:

There were no rod bearings left at all on the #2 journal, so I'm not sure what went wrong....

No, but it's heavier now than when I gave it to Greg.

The GTS has a built stroker in it. This is the original engine that cratered on the drive home after picking it up in Oregon.
