Default '84 for sale on eBay--questions

At the risk of annoying those who don't like the postings about cars for sale, here is one I ran across on eBay as I do my research (see:

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...eferrerid=6940 )

Car:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=

I don't intend to buy or even pursue this car as I'm probably going to get an S4, and I'm not ready to make a decision, but I think it's a pretty car and am interested in getting others' opinions on it. I ran an Autocheck report and corresponded with the seller about the supposedly original and LOW (53K) miles.

Autocheck doesn't have ANY recorded mileage datapoints and does have "TMU" reported at several registrations. Seller says car's appearance is consistent with low miles and the P.O. says mileage is correct.

It's in Redwood City (SF Bay Area) if anyone wants to take a look.

I love that color...... one of the northwest racers is the same color....

One aspect to consider about the 83-84 USA is the engine....its the USA spec 4.7L with lower compression.....its NOT the EURO-ROW 4.7L 300-310hp engines...I think they are rated at 234hp? They do have the better 4 speed auto just like the later 928's..... so the performance is going to quite a bit less than the 32V or EURO 16V 928's

But, on a positive note, it'll survive a TB failure

Yes, very pretty color, IMHO.

That's quite a penalty--968 HP and 928 weight. Probably, what...400 lbs?

And the EURO's are problematical for California registration because of smog, right? Unless they were previously registered in Cali?

I've got my eye on another car anyway...

If your looking for a very reasonable S4, i will have the 88 available for LESS THAN $7,000 depending on how well it turns out. It will have a complete TB/WP job aswell.

I see $7,000 as the reasonable ceiling for the car, again depending on how deep i get into it but if your looking for an S4, I am not sure you would find one for less then what i need out of this one. Just something to consider

About the same....I think the later 968's were around 3200lbs & around 3400 for the 84?

Good point about smog on the euros...the bummer is they can pass...but tend to fail visual due to various items not found in euros...

My 84 Euro would weigh ~3250 with the whole interior in it.

That car on Ebay is very clean and original, something you don't see on cars like that very often. I would pay the opening bid of $6000 but no more just because it is a US 16v with the auto. These cars have the 2.20 rear end and combined with 234 hp makes them pretty lazy. You could always put Euro heads and cams in it, and it being a US car would pass the visual for CA smog.

The 968 manual coupe weighs in at 3086 lbs and the tip coupe at 3152 lbs.

That is a nice looking color combo. I wouldn't mind owning that car. I don't think mileage alone would warrant the price though. 928's can do alot of miles before getting tired. Whats more important is service history. Sitting for 12 years with occasional drives is not the best. The car does look very, very clean though. One question, however. If it has the competition package, wouldn't it have had the front and rear spoiler? Could it be ordered with only the rear spoiler, or did someone add it later?

My US 84 weighed 3241 with half a tank of gas and no spare tire. It's 3210 now with the Corbeau seats. The car has a full interior.

It was 3100 with no stereo, no spare, a fiberglass shell in place of the driver's seat, 928 Specialists sway bars, about 10 gallons of gas, and most of the carpet removed.
