Kick down non-op, Euro S2.
Had a 85 Euro auto here today, the owner asked me to test drive it. It has the usual 4 speed auto 'box.
The kickdown does not operate at all. The first stage vacuum kickdown works,
so if you're at 60mph and hit the throttle open, but not to kickdown, the tranny drops from 4th to 3rd.
But at the same speed, if you go to kickdown, then the tranny just kicks down to 3rd again, not straight down to 2nd gear like my car.
We switched on the ignition, and then engaged the kickdown switch, and heard the solenoid clicking on the gearbox. So the switch, wiring and kickdown relay appear to be OK. There was good vacuum at the engine at idle, although this was not tested at the box itself. The kick down cable also appeared to be present and adjusted reasonably tight.
Any ideas ?

Bowden cable is good, kickdown switch works and the solenoid engages.....it should work...
My next thought is a problem with the transmission....when the fluid gets old or low, odd things can happen...like a failure of 1st gear start etc.....might be worth checking?

check that the bowden cable is correctly adjusted, the ball cup should slide on ball with no tightness or looseness. Check the 7 way under the air filter and check the vacuum at the trans modulator as well as the fluid level and also smell the fluid for burning

Thanks Stan. One afterthought was that the brakes needed high pressure even at low speed. This makes me wonder if there was a brake servo vacuum problem. And so possibly a vac problem at the 'box.
I only measured vacuum at the fuel damper at the front of the engine.
With no vac to the 'box, would the 1st stage kickdown work, just on the cable ?

The relay is normally closed. If it fails stuck on or its NC contacts are not connecting (e.g. OC) you will not get any kick-down. The relay is used to disrupt kickdown to cause the upshift at the RPM limit.
