Toothed Belt Warning Light Immediate Overheat

take some pics of the water pump if you can for us to look at. a full waterpump lock up is unusual, but certainly possible.

Just talked to the shop, water pump seized, belt stretched/being replaced. He said it was dumb luck, personally I think it was great resource management. I am glad it had that warning light.. Valves are clean, Thanks for all of the input. It was not started during any phase following initial overheat. I did pull the post connecter this morning, it was all I could find to prevent turning it over. So it is not as bad as I thought and he can put on my new Bilsteins while it is in for the repair. Love that car.....

Also look in the block recess where the impeller rides. You don't want to see scoring from the impeller on the block. A very small amount is ok, but if there is radial scoring in the block from the impeller, and damage to the impeller, you've got more work to do.

Sure.
Right after you make damn sure that the shop actually does the timing belt system job correctly:
new carrier arm bushings
new idler and tension roller
assess condition of cam and oil pump sprockets
rebuild the tensioner
check the crank sprocket and under-crank-sprocket idlers
check the Hall sender connector, replace if cracked
If the shop just puts on a new belt and a rebuilt water pump, the belt system will need to be done again soon and if not the motor will shred itself.

Water pumps may not readily seize in the conventional sense ... but the bearing cage can fail, allowing the shaft to tilt under TB pressure, which grinds the drive pulley into the pump housing: this effectively stops the pump, causing rapid boil over, and clangs in the low belt tension alarm due to the pulley movement .....does my close call with a water pump failure in '03 with a 'new' S4 sound familiar?
Glad you stopped in time!

I am going to go over to shop today. It is at a local shop in Bear, DE Fairwinds Porsche. I will snap some photos, and make sure all is well. Lesson learned on PPI's. Bought the car without one on Rennlist. Got it here to Delaware, prior owner didn't notice rear bearings shot(couldnt hear radio), suspension shot(suspension on the stops, guess it wasnt noticed over bearing noise), and now the TB/WP. Well who knows. I guess the first 30 days could be more expensive... Always get a PPI, Always get a PPI even from an experienced Rennlist'er...

You win some, you lose some. PO didn't notice some pretty obvious things; I think you can't take much of what he may have said with anything but a bucket of salt; this may be indication of more deferred maintenance, BUT you got out of this w/o damage to the engine, a MAJOR win. If I were you, at this point I would replace the original tensioner with Ken's tensioner. It is well documented here (Porken) and you can start to really enjoy this machine.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Wow great to hear you caught it, before valve damage.
Personally, I had no idea of the condition of the WP, there was no notice of it on the receipt for the TB and I had assumed it wasn't done. (we didnt talk about that though i suppose) For all those playing at home, I am the PO
I have to say, as to the bearings, yeah I talked with some guys here about borrowing a tool to remove the rear bearings and doing them, but with the timing of the sale it didnt get done. But yes I did notice the noise.....
Very good news about the belt though with you having caught it. My first 928 was a valve bender.
Oh get the Gates or OE Porsche Belt. Ken's Tensioner would be great too.
This other car i have just started to overheat yesterday and this thread is very timely for me. I am thinking i need to do the belt on this car immediately.....

True but seeing the temp suddenly shoot to the extreme you shut down the engine then upon not finding any sign of the coolant having left the system you have to suspect at that point that the pump may be bad .... knowing the pump has problems means the timing belt has problems ... therefore the warning light in your mind should be flashing...
