I think the differnce in 3rd vs 5th breaking is that 5th is the input shaft to the torque tube at breaks at that coupling point, and 3rd is the actual gear that fails by stripping or breaking off teeth.

I hope he can get this thing together in time!

I dont think it is the gear that broke, its usually the shaft that fits to the torque tube. What would drilling a hole and welding it up do?? Is that if the gear itself was failing? Just curious.

If you deadend the crack and then refill it you might be able to prevent failure a tiny bit longer.

Mark,

Have you ever had a set of your gears cryo and then heat treated? have you ever been down that route for durability before?

There are 911s and 944s with aftermarket sequential gearboxes in PCA GT classes...

I seem to remember Don H. cryo-treating his 3rd gear and not having any failures after... ?

They usually have to run in GTA if they dont meet the class requirements for the specifics for GT1,2,3 etc.

I see . I dont know, does that work on the type of shafts that we have on the 928 torque tube, short shaft or 5th gear?

Its certainly an idea maybe he can beef it up by welding all around it too.

In my case I can never have enough so it seems. I did order a new 5th to fix my one box but I'd like to have another. Do you have a lead?
