I think the differnce in 3rd vs 5th breaking is that 5th is the input shaft to the torque tube at breaks at that coupling point, and 3rd is the actual gear that fails by stripping or breaking off teeth.

I dont think it is the gear that broke, its usually the shaft that fits to the torque tube. What would drilling a hole and welding it up do?? Is that if the gear itself was failing? Just curious.

For starters the Porsche clubs require you use a Porsche gearbox but when they break they are not totally lost. For a while Porsche was selling new GTS 5th gears for under $500. No longer the case
There are 911s and 944s with aftermarket sequential gearboxes in PCA GT classes...
