To me the question of which is faster is the same as asking "who was faster, Carl Lewis or Edwin Moses?". They run different races.

You will beat anything pre-2005 no problem with the exception of the Cobra which is 425HP. 94-99 Mustangs will be like walking the dog.

Watch that transmission if you're drag racing and keep your radar detector on.

All I can say is anyone with a 32V and a 5 spd. should not be losing any race with a n/a Mustang stock for stock. They claim the newer one can do a 5.2 0-60. We have not been able to do better than 5.7 in the ones we have tested here. Funny story here. I had a guy on this list come to the shop because his 928 wasn't performing well. When he arrived we chatted and I asked him for a spirited ride to assess his issue. He took every shift to 45-5000 rpm and then it was 3 seconds or so to complete a shift. Tells me that he never winds it up like this but wanted to show me the problem! I convinced him to let me drive and he was upset with my shifting but overjoyed with what he experienced. I explained that these cars like to bounce off the limiter (so to speak) and you are doing more harm than good driving it like that. I have seen this time and time again. OBTW Joe cat I don't think your car is in good running order based on our discussion at Hershey and this current thread. You should bring it down for a look-see.

yes there are plenty of newer "lesser" cars that will spank a 928 in a straight line drag race....especially under 60mph......above that the higher HP and aerodynamics of the 928 come into play and it tends to fair better.....

A stock S4 automatic when launched decent should hit 0-100 in 14 seconds or so.......with 0-60 in around 6.... the 5 speeds will be slightly better.....

half a second better actually. I wonder how mods play into our cars, i.e. exhaust, blackbird intakes, etc.

Yeah, I have a 2005 Dodge 5.7 Hemi vehicle, and it would probably beat a lot of 928's off the line. And they even have a top speed of 165mph, with the speed limiter removed. With 350 horsepower stock, it's pretty equivalent to a 928. Equally heavy, etc. But anything over 100mph, and the thing feels light, wobbly, and unsafe. The 928 is so much more stable, and handles WAY better. It's just not an ideal 0-60 drag racing car.

I'm unable to find a 2005 5.7L Dodge model that is under 4,100lbs...

Got behind a new Mustang GT on an roundy round on ramp. By new, it still had the new car tag. I was much faster on the curve and moved out to pass as we merged onto the empty Sunday morning highway. I could tell by the exhaust note as I passed the Mustang that he was trying to keep me from going around, but he just didn't have it. He stayed behind and got off at the Ford dealership exit. I kinda felt sorry for spanking the obviously proud new car owner.

Ya never know ‘til you stand on the pedal. What’s the alternative, shrug shoulders and make excuses for a 20+ year-old car that will still do 0-60 under 6? Please...

My owners manual says 5.7s 0-60 and 14.2 qtr with manual, and 6.3s 14.5qtr for Auto.

There is however some variation - if you look at this part of Pirtle's site:

http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/reviews.htm

You'll see that one magazine reported 5.5s and 13.9 quarter mile for the S4, presumably a manual.

Two entirely different cars - I had an '05 GT, and now have an '07 SGT Mustang, and I've had two 928s. The Mustangs are fantastic cars, and probably the best hp bang for the buck in a new car. They'll light it up fast, and contrary to what some folks think, my Mustangs have acquited themselves quite well at the track - I've spanked more than a few p-cars (this is just weekend DE however - all of us weekend warriors with varying degrees of "***** out").
The 928s are another story altogether - I've driven across the country at ridiculous speeds and never felt the slightest fatigue. I've run against other cars that took me off the line, only to be burried later down the stretch. The 928 clearly outperforms the Mustangs in the twisties, but again, the Mustangs aren't that bad either. YMMV

My Jeep Commander with a 5.7 Hemi will eat just about any 928 off the line. 'Course it gives up a lot once you get over 45mph. But even my old slow US '83 will outrun most Mustangs prior to 1995 if the road curves even a little, and that's very cool.

Yeah, they are very heavy, but they have very good gearing for off-the line launches.
Most stock hemis can pull 12 second quarter miles, and modified ones (non-supercharged)
can pull 10 and 11 second quarter mile times.

But as NoVector pointed out, any 20 year old car, that can still perform as well as the 928,
and for a minimal cost, is still very, very, very impressive.

Sometimes you have to pick what kind of car you want to own.
Do you want a "sports car" or do you want a drag racing car?
The 928 is a phenomenal "supercar" for the price. But it was
never intended to be a drag racer.
