Honestly is a Mustang GT faster than a 928 -

Lets take a 2005 mustang gt auto against a 1990 928 S4

Both stock-
Which one gets to 70 faster?

I ask this as I am hearing people talk like this car is a sonic rocket- when actually, it's the most beautiful tank.

I hear and read stories of wheels spinning in second gear. "watch that the rear doesn't go out on you".

Cause I am not really feeling that - When people sell their cars they write how fast it is- meanwhile my friends audi 4 cylinder turbo 2.0 6 speed eats me till 70.

So lets be honest- are they really that fast???

When people ask how fast they are i usually tell them its like the older IROC camaro's.

...am i going to get a spanking????

A lot of cars on the road will spank us 0-70, try 70-120, that's where you'll shine..

Joe is your S4 running right? During acceleration you should be able to chirp second if the car is running right unless your running some fatter tires in the rear

Seriously though, the 928 has something that many other cars don't (even modern cars) which is the ability to hide the true speed of the car. My DD is a Mazdaspeed3 which weighs 3000 Lbs and has 263 Hp. It feels fast when driving and it corners on rails. Overall fun car but not nearly as capable as the shark. As soon as the speed is cranked up you can feel the cars rear lighten up and overall the car doesn't feel settled at high cornering speeds (sweepers). When I drove the shark for the first time this year I thought...damn this thing is slow. Then I looked at my surroundings and speedometer and realized how fast I was going. Weird feeling at first but it certainly made me realize what this car is all about. The shark needs some serious velocity to give the feeling of speed.

There have been many Mustang GT's that I've torn up, but none of them have been from a stop light. Usually rolling at 40 to 100 and in 3 different S4's. Two of them with x-pipes and all of them running top knotch. One I got three car lengths on. Others were one to two.

2009 Mustang GT has an MSRP of $26k - $28k
300bhp / 320lb ft torque - they weigh 3483lbs

This is the slowest of the bunch (well, not counting the V6). So be careful if any Mustangs pull up with Shelby or Saleen on the door.

Joe--

The 928 was designed to go from one end of Germany to another in comfort and safety at very, very high speed vs. drag racing from light to light. One of the engineering choices that reflects this mission is the 2.20 axle ratio, the Mustang is running a considerably shorter axle ratio biased to lower speed acceleration. That said, these are still 6.0 seconds or lower cars to 60 mph even with an automatic. One other issue that may make the car feel less responsive than it is--the automatic trans starts off in second gear from a dead stop unless you shift down to three then two then back to three while stopped.

On a winding road, the Mustang would not have a clue where you went...

If you want to go really fast in a straight line, Tim Murphy and others are very capable of addressing that with forced induction.

Our cars are not that fast off the line, by today's standards. Back in the day, it was a mean machine!

IIRC 0-60 for a stock '90 S4 was 6.0 seconds. 5.8 for the GT.

The 2009 Mustang GT came in at 5.2 seconds and the 2010 GT claims 4.9. Without boost, you will loose that race. I'd rather loose that race in a 928 than in a Honda Accord, but then... I wouldn't loose that race.

I had a 1995 Mustang GT 5 speed, last of the 5.0. Compared to my 928 it would eat it off the line, but after 60 mph no comparison, the shark is faster.

It's over 70-80 that the shark feel like at home.

Actually, the first time I drove mine, I was playing with my father in his Matrix... For fun I step on the pedal and passed him like if it was nothing...

But why that speedo is maxed at 85 km/h?? Not a big deal, passed that a while ago... I should be at 100-110...

Oh wait, it's mp/h! Crap!

And seriously, I've seen my car go above 4000-4500 rpm only once... And it scared the hell out of me.
Was like a dragon roaring and the speedo just went berzerk.

Aside, even if the Mustang was faster... I get jealous look from their driver.
And I doubt Mustang driver get random people at lights tell you how nice it is...

Make sure I'm not behind you. My car routinely bumps off the rev limiter.

The 2008-09 Mustang Bullitt has 3:73 gears 315 HP 6500 red line and a 151 top end speed. Its a "sleeper" hotrod. Not even saying its close to the 928 in quality, high speed stability, or top end. But if your running stock auto S4 against it on a red light...look out.

Only one mustang and/or GTO has been able to best my times at our local autocross. It was a Cobra, it was supercharged to 550 rwhp, and was on ax race rubber. And with my x-pipe and RMB they were all jealous of the sounds the GTS was making. I was only down by 2 seconds so I image that if I went to the trouble and cost of a second set of wheels and tires with some sticky competition tires instead of street tires, I would have beat him.

Cool thread..!
We are all speed freaks in this community!
I have beaten a couple of Mustangs over the years, and many other car models.
Subaru Imprezas other souped up rice cookers, Beemers, Mercs etc...
The only car to beat my GTS manual was another old Porsche..!
A tuned 944 Turbo S.
He got me...
But blew the head gasket in the process and ended up at Sandens in Gothenburg shortly after for an expensive repair....!!
So 928s rule!
Cant really call that a defeat eh..?
As I drove home unscathed!

He has larger tires than stock I was able to take the mustang GT's of the early/mid 2000's with my '86. It always was a very strong running early 32-valver. The bigger tires and LSD with the 2.2 5-speed helped a lot to completely hook up in 1st gear in a straight line. I would also be able to inch away from 350Z's. The MazdaSpeed3 I was not able to inch away from, it was like there was a chain holding us together all the way to ~130. An E46 M3 would take me with little problem though.

With my GT I laugh at E46 M3's. It's not even a contest; I can put over 5 car lengths between us by the time I reach 100. C6 corvettes and new M3's really don't stand a chance either. I can just slightly inch away from an '08 997TT, although that is very close. I'm about even with Gallardos if the driver is good (they get slightly ahead 0-40, but I reel them in after and then we are chained). There are very few cars that can best a supercharged 928.

Must have BOOSSSTTT!! All my friends have been chomping at the bit to run me. One has an SRT-10 pickup(that one will get close), then an LS1 trans am WS6(yes I will lose, but I'm curious), and a boosted 240(not sure about this one)
