I wonder if you can help me with a current list of recommended independent mechanics in the San Francisco Bay Area (preferably South Bay near Mountain View) that know their way around the Porsche 928?

A. Bauer in Oakland. Not in the South Bay but worth the drive. They are a multi-generation Porsche shop, meaning, father/sons/grandson and they know their way around the different generations of the 928 as well as other Porsches.

There is a relatively new shop in Santa Clara. The owner (Marvin) has worked on my car a few years back at T&D in Campbell. Then he went to work for a Porsche Dealer, and then started his own business. Very nice guy, and very knowledgeable.
