Sudden boost in amperage

84' 928 5 spd; had alternator rebuilt recently (stick jammed in v-belt) since reinstallation car has gone no more than 200 miles and all seemed OK. Today on highway -70mph- car began to miss and without accelerator being pumped engine would die. Went 1/4 mile and came to a stop.
When engine was running -during the missing bit-the amp meter on the pod was pegged at +5.
Any suggestions - battery need replacement- alternator issue - taaa-da.

remove the alt belt and start the car, over voltage will kill the brain

Sounds like the alternator rebuild is suspect. You could try measuring jump post voltage with engine running. Once again, my 84 does not have an amp meter; do you have an aftermarket one for some reason? Agree with Stan that overvoltage is dangerous, but you haven't given any voltage numbers.

I had this happen on my first 928, and '83, at night the voltage would go sky high, burning the headlights out. Never had any effects to the electrical or the computer. Turned out that the voltage regulator was gone. The good news that it's a very common part and any rebiuld shop has it in stock. I had mine repalced for $25, over 10 years ago and the car still has the same regulator in it.

There is no 'ampmeter' (ammeter) on any model year and I don't know what the "pegged at 5+" means (oil pressure guage...?)...
What the status now - what does the voltmeter say ?
