Its worth nothing. you are doing him a favor to take it off his hands.
then, you'll need to put some cash into it to get it running again, providing the car's engine is in good shape. thats why it needs to be free. (or real cheap)
what if it has bent valves, or clogged oil lines, or starting to spin a bearing. the car will be worth the front two fenders, hood doors, maybe the trannie if its good, and a trip to 928intl or the dump.
Now, if you take his word for it and all it needs is a timing belt, then it might be a good deal from as high as $1k for a non running car.
I had one given to me for free. $8k later, it was a race car (kind of), but still was very old. (new clutch, timing belt, radiator, some tuning, wiring, brakes, safety equip, new cat, etc)

Sorry for the wavy pictures...the iphone doesn't do well.
Here's a couple pics of the car. These were the only ones that were somewhat visible.

Can't tell alot from the phone pics. If you like the color of exterior and interior. I'd offer $1000-$1500 if the owner will allow you to do all the inspection items below before purchase. Say you spoke to enthusiasts about the car, and the you learned the pitfalls of part replacement could entail... Get it then do all the regular stuff.. tune up. FUEL LINES, timing belt/water pump...about $1000 spent... and you will not be upside down. Try rotating the timing gears a full rotation on each head by hand (this might require the spark plugs to be pulled). Squirt a little motor oil in the cylinders and rotate the crank with a 27mm deep socket and a breaker bar. If the belt skipped gear, it could be the tensioner needs rebuilt, or just was not tensioned properly, or neglected to be retensioned after a belt replacement and initial stretch. Also could be a seized water pump. The paint looks decent as can be told from a cell phone photo. I'd go for it. but then again, I'm a certified 928 nutcase. Welcome to the tank!

Hey Mike you can't be TO much of a 928 nut case...you only have ONE of them! If you want to see some REALLY sick people just look at me and some of my ilk! I do LOVE your table man! I have a spare motor (that is a POS and worthless...pretty much) in my shed that I would LOVE to turn in to art work like that. Can you build me a few of those supports (top and bottom) with some good pics so I can build one too?!

He indicated he could tell it was off time from noting the top marks, but could never match up the bottom. I don't really know what that means. Does the number I provided add any value?
Can you tell me what rotating the timing gears will accomplish? and should I be able to do this by hand after removing the belt? Rotating the crack will hopefully tell me the engine isn't locked up correct?
Paint looks good other than the blemish on the rear bumper (you can see it from in the picture).
Thanks again!
