Default The Transformation: From Good To Great--Hopefully

Thank you guys for welcoming to the Tank. I look forward to meeting all the DFW people in the coming months and the rest of you at the Dallas meeting in July/August. So I made my post about the purchase of the 1982 Red 928. I appreciate everyone's comments and I think I'm going to heed the advice and keep the spoilers off of her and keep her clean.

The original paintjob as shown in the pics made her look pretty damn good. Like a 9. But in reality she was a 7. After 911 Enterprises in Dallas took care of the mechanical issues, off to the paint shop she went.

Here she is --being stripped. The good news is that there was absolutely no body damage, previous repair or other concerns. The body is in remarkable condition. My painter said the previous owner must have lived somewhere near a farm because there was "wheat and grass clippings" everywhere and anywhere parts came off.

That explains some of that 13k. I was afraid that you spent 13k at 911E.

Or did I get that backwards?

Hope you got yours back in a timely manner, there are some horror stories about lengths of time in a shop. Sterlings (you will meet him) had his in for 10 months plus. Mine is now a week overdue and they just started the body work I wanted done.

Ahh the bliss of sports car ownership.

Now THAT is the way to paint a car! Your car will basically be brand new when you get it back! That is AWESOME! In '82 that car would have cost you $38k PLUS and here you are $21k in it when its all said and done (maybe a bit more...from one post it looks like you have been in touch with Paul Champagne, that will cost you some more money for sure, but WHO can resist his AWESOME WORK?! Certainly NOT ME!) If you take that $38k 1982 dollars that would be what $150k in 2009 bucks? Probably close anyway...certainly if they had continued building the 928 through till today they would be on showroom floors for $150k+!

So, consider you bought a NEW '82 928 for $21k... that is much better than the deal I got on my NEW '82 928, but you can find that story elsewhere in this forum... Look up "Blue82" or Kie Robertson's Barn Find thread.... Blue82 is my baby though and I could not be happier to have her in my garage! She is SOOOO YUMMY, I just can't keep my eyes off that beautiful girl!

Best to you Ed! Looking forward to meeting you and seeing your beauty of a 928!

Good god man, you just got her together! Well, you are gonna have an incredible car on your hands when you are done. Now, just make sure to use the right oil and boost.

Sean,

My bill at Nine Eleven was $13,000. With the discount it was $10,500.00. They did a lot, and I mean alot , of work on teh car. My invoice if I recall correctly was 3 pages long. Dusty did a great job of calling me on just about everything that cost over $30.00, and he would show me how and why it needed replacing.

I think it was pretty safe to say the car had never really been maintained.

Mil,
Someone should mention membership. Best $20 you will ever spend on your car. And what the hell is $20 at this point?

Such is the case with many of the 928's out there. I thought i got a great deal on my GT @ $15k. I'll be I've spent over $20k additional on it (including the supercharger), but it sure has been fun!

I thought i got a great deal on my GT @ $17k. I know I've spent about $17k additional on it (not including any supercharger ), but it sure has been fun!

I see so many people that buy cars that are distressed and they just live with it, driving around fixing things only when they are forced to and they are never happy, never comfortable with the cars. You've made the tough choice to just bite the bullet and spend the dough so you can be happy instead of worried and disappointed.

Having a mechanic called 'Dusty Rhodes' is worth a few stories for sure...

Thanks for the invitation on May 2. I will attend. And secondly, intend to join here as well. I didn't have a credit card handy last night.

I have a Korean man near Parkland Hospital do the paint job. He's painted all my cars for 15 years. Not show quality work, but reasonable and good. He has a fascination with this car though. I think he really wants to do a great job on it.

I told him I wanted the bumpers off so they could be painted separarely and asked him to remove the side mirrors. When I stopped by today, he had removed , both bumpers, the rear quarter windows (because he didn't want to tape them), the sunroof (to remove the black trim and just about everything else that in a normal paint job has to be taped.

His assistant asked me if I planned on making this a show car. I said "no, but now that you guys have removed all the weatherstripping, panels, trim, etc...., I might just do that! lol

I swear this was supposed to be an $8,000 fun car.
