Default HVAC Control Connector Orientation

I am working on a friends 83 Euro and have traced the non working A/C to the HVAC Control. I figured it was a bad relay and tried the control out of my 85 and the compressor kick on.
I brought the 83 control to work with me and opened it up and found a burned out run on the circuit board, repaired it.
I just got home and must have left my brain at work because I can't remember the orientation of the connectors, they can go either way and I think the numbers on the connectors are up on both sides.
Stupid me for not taking pics. This is a pic from Dwayne's HVAC thread showing the way I kinda remember the connector going. His 87 is not the same color wires as this 83. Help.....

It should be "keyed". Look at the controller edge connector. There is a slot cut between the 3rd and 4th pin that should mate up with a tab in the harness plug.

Thats the weird part, the connectors are keyed and the control is not. I have the battery disconnected and I can install them either way.

Uh...Well, I can tell you the slot on the controller side is towards the front of the car. So, I gather the harness plug must not have a tab between the 3rd and 4th pin on one end?

Looking at the sharp bends in the plug wires in your picture, it looks like it would only go one way. If you tried to turn it around and plug it in the other way, it looks like the harness would not reach and all the wires would have to be bent the other direction.

I used mine as the sacrificial lamb to see if it would make smoke or work.
Numbers are on top and it worked, no smoke, compressor on.
Installed original controller, everything works other than compressor still
Looks like relay is dead. The relay is not like others I have seen.

There are a couple of different relays and they do not have the same pinout. I think the same Gruner was used in all the years through about 90. I ran into a different relay on a 90. Take a closeup picture of the top of the relay or give us the name and any numbers printed on it. Here's a thread about the relays...

That picture is from Dwayne's thread, this one had the wires twisted different. Our camera is on vacation with grandma, so no pics. I got involved with this car after finding an A/C shop was about the charge the female owner thousands to replace the compressor after only looking at her car for 5 minutes. The system works fine other that the control relay is toast.
All Relay markings as follows;
Gruner
171a-r1u-g33oh
12vdc
330r
8a
250vac 8260

Does the Gruner 330r have the function pattern printed on it like this Griner 202? Boy, 8 amp. That's a lot sturdier than the 202 I usually see.

No function pattern at all, Bill. The relay is an orangish brown color.
Part # 928.573.060.04 /11/04/10/99 9413942002 BEHR on outside of the controller case.
I can take pics tomorrow if grandma didn't throw the camera overboard.

Argh! I can't find anything on that relay, if it is a Gruner 330r as it appears. Very obsolete. The 83 wiring diagrams don't offer any help on this.

Yes, this car hates me. Got underneath and adjusted the clutch, it now goes into first and reverse like butter. Bleed the system one more time and bam! clutch pedal to the floor! Clutch master cylinder is stuck!
