Default clutch part question regarding the intermediate plate

Ive been using the stock 84 stuff on my S4 when i converted it to a dual disc, with the exception of the O.B. lower bell housing to take advantage of the starter mounting and simple removal of the bell housing and starter as one unit.

I know there were updaded clutch discs that were offered in 84, that had different hub lengths, but what about the intermediate plate? I have these two long dowels that seem to not do anything but jam against the bell housing inner side when im rotating the clutch for removal. . Is that intermediate plate the same as the earlier models? they both have the starter ring bolted to it, but one has these longer two dowels as well as some other alignmenet dowels that the early models dont seem to have . Scots is an 82 and he has this more stripped down intermediate plate without the dowels. anyone know the difference or if all the parts are interechangeable? Where the lever arms different too? I know the slave cylinder was different for the early bell housing, but are there other differences? can any intermediate plate be used on all the 2 disc clutches?

are the dowels your talking about round??
There are also 2 metal pins that would also come out of the rear side of the flywheel for the dealer Crank position Sensor.
If you have round dowels then these are probably alignment pins that are supposed to be tapped back into the I plate and flywheel, there are 3 alignment pins total, one is thicker than the rest so to orient the I plate to the flywheel

these two dowels are at the bottom of the intermediate plate and just seem to stick out for no reason. I have them on my car but never figured out what they are for. i know about the other dowels that fit into the flywheel that make installation easier, i imagine.

Thanks

The three dowels around the outside are to center everything precisely. The the bolts hold it together.

The OB clutch had a lip opn the flyhweel to do this. Inconvenient when resurfacing.

Don't know about the 2 dowels of which you speak.

The two dowels MK is speaking of it for the TDC sensor for factory diagnostics.
You can find this in the factory manual.
This is why Stan asked if they were round. As the centering pins are round and these 2 pins are not.

yup, those are them,

They arent actually square, but knocking the off (a hammer will work) makes no real difference.

if you remove these pins you may unbalance the I plate ring gear

good point about the balance.

so , is this intermediate plate interchangeable with prior year set ups, or do they need to be matched with an appropriate pressure plate or are all those the same? O.B. vs new ones.
