Red face Little B$%^&*d Pintle Cap

Nice simple job changing the injectors took a turn for the worse when one of the pintle caps parted company with the injector as I removed the rail. My careless attempt to extricate it resulted in it disappearing down the intake

Luckily the valve was fully closed so it didn't get any further (not sure it would fit past, 8mm lift, maybe?). I guess I needed to change some breather hoses and fit a new oil filler seal, but even so I wasn't planning on removing the plenum.

Lucky save. Although it probably wouldn't have done too much damage, I wouldn't want something like that entering the combustion chamber.

+928. And if you can't, it's just crappy little plastic. That engine will chew it up and spit it out without much drama. I would try vacuuming it first though. You may also have some luck with a long dowel or screw driver with some weather strip adhesive on the tip. That stuff sticks to everything.

Good luck

It's already out, I just hadn't planned on removing the plenum, it was just meant to be an injector swap...

I worked on an engine in which 6 of these were missing. It ran fine. We replaced them and 4 came up missing the next time we removed the injectors. They get crunched up and spit out. Still, as you know it is there, try to fish it out.

For a brief moment I did consider just leaving it, but I had visions of the cap getting stuck holding the valve open and causing piston contact. Don't want to have to deal with that again...

In fact it didn't take too long to remove the plenum, but last time I refitted the plenum it took me about half a dozen attempts to get the cable and hose routing right.

So when I remove the replacement injectors because they're the wrong spec for the car, one of the pintle caps falls off, the same position in the plenum as last time. I guess that hole in the plenum was smaller than any of the others, causing the O ring to jam, pulling the pintle cap off.

After reading Bill's post I decided not to pull the plenum to remove the pintle cap, I tried fishing it out with a four prong grab type thing, but it's impossible to see anything, so I gave up and left it in.

The engine started ok, and ran ok, and once it warmed up there was a slight burning plastic smell - or perhaps I imagined it. It really didn't feel right leaving such a large foreign object to work it's way through the engine, but so far at least, no obvious signs of damage.
