I would buy a big truck or a highly efficient car like a Toyoya Prius...(or both) why buy anything that competes with a 928 for your fun driving time... Get something that contrasts and complements instead.

I drive my Prius and try to get max miles per gallon - it forces me to drive totally differently but its kind of fun. It also offsets the guzzling slightly.

I also have a big SUV out of need for hauling - my other guzzler. Its a 4X4 so it also provides a different driving experience from time to time.

The both feel totally different to the 928 and I like it that way...

You are not alone, the rear end of the Boxster is horrible.

Think of it this way, everyone you pass has to look at it

There are over 230 Boxsters on Auto Trader for under $15k right now, even some S models.

Judging by your taste in color, this is right up your alley

Lexus 430 SC; I don't know anything about them, other than it looks nice. It never seems to come up here so I assume the performance crowd has dissed it, maybe for good cause, but the interior workmanship is nice.

If you want to be a little different, how about a Volvo S60R? These cars are very underrated and really haul *** (300 hp and 6 speed) and can take 4 people in comfort. One here, a 2006 with 36000 miles for $18900.

I looked at the Volvo's very closely and almost pulled the trigger on a V70R wagon not to long ago. After spending about two months on the Volvo forum I changed my mind. Complaints of early suspension wear, problems with the all wheel drive and a host of other issues scared me considering the age of the vehicle. I didn't want a DD which would become a project car, I wanted something reliable which was fun and wouldn't take my attention away from the shark. I ended up buying a Mazdaspeed3 for practicality, fun factor and sleeper look. Some great deals on 09's too.

OK, so I will offer a totally different direction............I mean I love modern cars as much as the next guy, but why go the Vintage Route:

DeTomsso Pantera (might be pushing the price range, but maybe a steal out there for $20-30k)
Austin Healey 3000
Triumph TR6
Lotus Elise (yeah I know newer car, but I think pretty cool)

I have a 95 Mercedes SL 600 - great car for the weekends. You can pick up one with low miles in the $17,000 range. Beautiful construction, great driver and 400 HP. You will never do better for the price - my sticker shows $126,450 list price in 1995.

Lotus Elise would definitely be on my short list of "if I was single" cars. Prices have dropped fast in the past few months.

The Elise would be on my "now I am single because I just pulled into the driveway with this car" list.

If you go the 911 route try to get a 2002 or newer. Lots of improvements.

ah ha ha ha, a prius as a mid-life crisis mobile. Though it is an odd question as you already have a 928.

Get the Hot Rod, or Sports Car you always wanted but couldn't have as a teen. That will bring back that satisfied grin.

Thanks for the ideas folks. Now I'm confused but thinking. Added several new cars to the list including a mid 90's V8 Lotus Esprit. Need to drive a Boxter.

I put about 1k miles on a Boxter. My first impression was not so great (absolutely no torque) but once I got past that I really enjoyed it but it still needs some juice

It's hard to pick something to "settle" on after driving the Shark. Just can't see having another one. If I get an S4, I'll ignore the Schnitzzle....
