We have seen two bad PSD's already this year.
Replacement is circa $6k from Porsche.
I all ready have a relationship with a company in Germany that can rebuild the PSD and bench test it for circa $1500. Not cheap but better than $6k.
The best way to protect your PSD is to flush it regularly.

It is not saying NLA but non are available so maybe they will get more in if we are lucky.

It looks like a work around is going to be in order if these are NLA.

So we need to somehow remove the old filter and add an in-line one to the hose.

From looking up the bum of the one I have, I think that it may be possible to remove and replace the filter assuming you can find a replacement filter cartridge. But, I'm not willing to test this theory on a new reservoir.

Maybe Ryan's working on a reach around.

Depending on the condition of my existing reservoir I may consider sacrificing it to find an alternative. If its in good condition I'm not sure it woudl be worth damaging it since you never know when you might need it in the future.

Anyone have access to a really high mileage GT that is totalled? Would be nice to disassemble and get a better look at the filter. Filter almost looks like an inline fuel filter used for riding mowers but its hard to be certain.

My PET has a 928 number under "reservoir". Of course I didn't write it down before coming here, so I can't tell you what it is , but I also remember the second 3 digit seg is different as well. [EDIT: Reservoir, 928 315 013 01] I assume the basic "NLA" situation is not in question. Just wanted to note this discrepancy, and hope for the obvious.

NAPA lists a PS filter under the 928 GT. It is an inline filter. Has anyone used one of these?

SteveG-

I ran the 964 part # past the guys at Sunset and they said they show 211611381B as a P/N for what they call the "PSD reservoir strainer". For $4.03 I ordered one just to see what shows up. Will post a pic when it arrives.

WCJ- I don't know anyonw that's tried an inline filter, make sure you put it on the low-pressure side of the circuit......

I wonder what the flow is for the P/S fluid system vs the PSD fluid system. Material compatibility would also need to be checked to insure the brake fluid would not attack the filter element or external materials. Pressures would also need to be checked although it does appear that the reservoir doesn't see any pressure or minimal.

Certainly a possiblity if it all checks out.

Rob I think the strainer is picture 2 in my first post. It should definitely be checked to determine if any large pieces are lodged in there.

That will be the strainer at the top of the res. It is most similar - if not identical - to that that sits in the mouth of the brake fluid reservoir. PET does not show a p/n for the internal filter - at least not on the same page as the rest of the PSD system.

Dave-

Duh, that never occurred to me. Come to think of it, I don't recall there being one of those mesh strainers in my PSD reservoir, so I guess there's no harm in buying one. Will report back anyway.

I have been searching the Porsche system for dealers with the PSD reservoir sitting in there stock rooms and buying them up. I have about five more either here or on there way. Because I paid extra postage to get them to me they are $45 each (plus shipping) if anyone wants one.
I have stripped down one of the reservoirs to get at the filter. Part number on the filter is definitly 964 355 183 00. This part does not exist in the Porsche system 8>(. It looks exactly like a small version of the smog pump filter with metal end caps. It has an O ring on the bottom and is held in place by a clip washer that can be removed using long nosed pliers. The filter is located in position prior to assembly of the reservoir as it will not come out of the neck. There is a small lip inside the neck which could be removed with a dremel (need to flush the reservoir after this action) to allow the filter to be removed and installed without any detrimental effect on the reservoir.
Now if we can only find the filter.
