Default Anatomy of a Parking Brake

I have recently decided to add a parking brake to my car. The PO had decided to remove it (an odd choice IMO, considering it is a 5 speed). I ordered all the parts from 928intl (and received them extremely fast). I was working on it last night and thought that I had them out together correctly, however I must not have.
I cannot figure out what would keep them seated along the hub. They keep wanting to unseat themselves toward the outside of the car.
Also, (maybe related) there are two smaller springs (Number 15 in the diagram),what are the purpose of these? What do they press against? When I insert them in the slot of the shoe it appears to belong in, it just runs into the wheel hub that spins. I am sure the springs would last about two seconds like that.

Bob-

First, I hope that the PO left #24 on the hub carrier, you need it to attach the brake shoes and PB cable to. If he didn't, the only way to install it is to remove the hub, which will destroy the rear wheel bearing in the process. This is kind of a big WYAIT......

The parking brake is way too rubegoldbergian to my addled mind- Dr. Bob handled this part of the process when we did my rear wheel bearings. Hopefully he will be along to outline the e-brake assembly process. I can tell you the #15 spring gets grabbed with a needle nose pliers like so, INSIDE the spring coils :



To hold the pads in place you push in and rotate 90o. I think the J-hook end (below) attaches to #24 in the diagram. Hence the need for it. If it's not on the hub already, ya got problemz.

when you push the #15 springs through the backing plates they are captured on the hub carriers, you should look and see where they are grabbing, as if you miss the rib o0n the rear side of the carrier the springs will come loose and damage the shoes.
You will need a bright light to see the holes on the back side of the carriers

I do still have the #24 part on the hub. I am at a loss as to how that #15 spring attaches to it though. I see slots on the shoes, but behind on the #24 plate there is a bolt with a nut on it, but no slot to insert the "J" part of the spring.
I am also womdering what does the other end of the #15 spring press against. Presumably a spring there must me pushing or pulling against two things.

Thanks Mrmerlin. Could it be that the nuts and bolts should not be in the #24 plates?

the 24 plates IIRC just float on the hub and the springs going through the shoes lock them down. If you would post a picture it will make things easy to see whats going on with the parts.
Since your talking about the PO) removing the brakes then it would stand to reason that he found the loose plate in need of a few bolts to secure it since the shoes/springs were removed

Bob-

In the WSM there's another good exploded diagram on page 46-13- shows the holes in the backplate (#24) through which the springs go. On the right side of page 46-15 it shows the medial side of the hub carrier with the end of spring #15 being held in place- the spring goes all the way through the hub carrier.

Bob--

As you can see in Rob's picture, I used a needle-nosed pliers to remove the springs. For installation, I used a nut driver that just fits around the springs. That way you can push with one hand, and use the other to feel where the little hook on the spring sits over the rib on the back of the carrier. There's no twisting involved in removal or installation, just start out with the spring in there with the hook pointed towards the rib. Once you push it through, manipulate the nutdriver to cause the hook to go ver that little rib/hump/protrusion/whatever.

I also wrote a little instruction on parking brake parts assembly order in the rear wheel bearing thread running concurrently with this. Cuts down on the bad language and screaming that scares the little kids in the neighborhood.
