Default Dash Illumination Options

I was about to order the Blue LED dash kit from Jager ($91.25)... then did a
search here and came up with a bunch of questions.

1. Is Blue too cheesy? Obviously a matter of opinion, just wish I could
see it better than the crappy pic on jagereng.com.

2. I've been happy with the Jager quality before but is it really worth the
$70 difference of the parts on ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...Q5fAccessories

3. Why does Jager offer 2 separate kits, 78-82 then 83-88? What's the
difference? How come the ebay kit claims to cover 78-88?

4. Anybody had good luck with EL-Glo gauge covers that would rate them as
superior to the LED change?

1. I like blue.
2 & 3. IIRC that set on ebay is for LED bulbs that replace the incandescent and use the original wedges. Jager, I believe replaces the wedges.
4. I am using reverse EL Glo with LED's to light the needles. I like it alot.

Thanks for the input,

What are 'wedges'? Some kind of reflector?

Do you have any pics up of your dash illuminated?
Did you use White LEDs?
How much did your setup cost?

Rich,
I am sorry I don't have any pix yet. The LED wedges ^^^ throw more light than the LED bulbs with original wedges IMHO.

Ok, about the wedges. Are they necessary? Aren't the LEDs a lot brighter anyway? I've read
the dimming rheostat isn't going to work well with the LED. I guess I always do drive every car
with the dash dimmer on high.. So maybe it's nice to have them bright...

LED bulbs are only a little brighter IMO. The wedges make a big difference.

Those are the stock wedges. Left is already removed. Middle halfway out from holder. The Jager units attach to the same area with two sided tape and the wires go thru the holes at the narrow end of the wedge holder and attach to the light blue bulb holders in the pic. The stock wedges are not used with the Jager conversion.

The Jager blue LED system is brighter than the stock light holes with LED bulbs plugged in.

I put the "Cool White" LEDs in my '87 S4. It was perfect, not tuner-ish or cheesy. It looked factory.

The LED wedges are easy to install and probably more evenly throw the light across the gauge faces.

I got my kit from Nicole at Hooked on Cars.

This may seem a strange question, but are the LED's in the wedges accessible/replaceable?

I bought the Jager red LED kit for my dash , a/c and clock. I haven't installed it yet its in my pile of projects. Also got the aluminum gauge surrounds, it should look sweet when complete, and won't be too bright and compete with the road which is what you really want to see, just enough light to scan the gauges and quickly get the info needed. Red won't cause your pupils to un-dilate like most other colors in the light spectrum. Thats the main reason I went with red. Some of the various kits and colors look nice but throw off too much carnival light that would overpower my night-vision. I did, however, get the blue LEDs for the interior illumination lights, may be a tad rice but should look cool on the black leather at night.

Below are the most helpful threads that I had subscribed to for referencing the interior light conversion

Keith's awesome LED thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-looooong.html
Chuck's dash (in this good thread by 6Mil) was the one I'm modeling my conversion/design after (thanks Chuck!)
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...uage-trim.html
Dwayne's comprehensive manual for repairing speedo and fuel gauges wyit (both of mine need repair too)
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...s-part-ii.html

Best of luck with your project. Post pics of your results and I'll do the same to compare different options for folks looking for LED options.

Quick question on topic: Do any of our vendors sell a kit or even just individual replacement LED's for all the 'other' lights in the dash (besides the main wedges). I'd rather just buy the bulk of them preferably from one of our own guys instead of spending the time piecing together an order from a big LED company. I still need to buy these before I get started and I hope to get my own project done in the next week or so, time permitting.

Hi Rich:

Yes, you need to order the correct kit for your model year - the early and later ones are different, but I don't have an older one in front of me right now.

As to the color, when it comes to the instruments, it really is a matter of personal preference. VW started the blue some years ago, and is now moving away from it again - supposedly, because blue light is a bit harder for the eyes to see at night. I can't personally confirm that, though.

I would say I sell a few more cool white kits than blue, and very few red ones. The cool white looks closest to stock, which may explain why it's most popular.

On a different note:

If you want to upgrade your interior lights with LEDs at the same time - to prevent short circuits from buckling dome lights, or to make life easier on your battery - then consider this:

If you put colored light into the dome light, finding anything inside your car will be more difficult, as everything will appear in one color. Therefore, my recommendation is to use colored LEDs only for the doors. I have them in stock, and can subsititute as many as you want in a set.

Hi Nicole, do you sell the other LEDs for various warning lights etc in the dash?

BTW I was going to order the LEDs through your site but didn't see the trim rings I wanted so ordered directly thr0ugh Jager, otherwise I'd rather give you the business.
