Damn!

Makes my new - factory rebuilt 1995 GTS 5spd box - which I bought on German eBay for EUR1200 with all the associated paperwork look like the bargain of the century.

Have a 1990 GT box in the garage with damaged pinion wring... Anyone selling these?

I know, the GT trans I have is PSD as well though, although it does have a method of manually adjusting it.

I thought the GTS transmission was stronger and was already prepared with cooler(s), so was preferred.

No complaint about the GT trans I bought, more of an issue of me having (relatively expensive) bits laying about waiting (on me).

:

I tried that method for years but went back to the early LSD which I prefer.

Yes, I know I have thought of retrofitting it when I get to that point.

Is the GTS in any way physically beefier than, say, a late S4 5spd?

Yes. There were several changes done meant to make it stronger than GT box.

I think you have mentioned this before Erkka. Bigger center shaft, right? And some increase in bearing size. Anything else?

I know that was there intention but I swear the GTS 5th gear is not as strong. They started adding a hole at the base of the gap in the spline and I have broken it there twice.

Factory did want to make box stronger by puting stronger bearings between input and pinion shafts. They might have weakened input shaft by mistake but pinion and layshafts should better remain in correct distance compared to each other due to bearing change.

Interesting information. You are not specifically breaking it IN that gear, but that gear is breaking in some other event? That was a crap sentence, but you may know what I mean.

Dan:

Hopefully my first e-mail is first as I e-mailed immediately, then posted as a second comm ;^)

Despite which ever of us is first, I have not yet heard from Lloyd.

Let's post when either of us hears.

Yes, but some of the pieces might allow our GTS's to stay together at a pristine level a lot longer.

HMMMMM

Interesting Mark

I am now wondering if it wouldnt be a better idea to start with a GT gearbox and add some squirters such as Louie did to his. I assume you would run just a small electric oil pump which would help to cool the fluid and allow you to add the squirters to keep the gears themselves a bit cooler. Not a weekend project but it is something i think could be done by a competent individual.

With the weak 5th gear? would you go with an earlier 5th gear and machine it to fit the GTS shaft? Or do you have to replace with the same inferior part? What does a gear cost, can you buy them individually?

Oh and Jim I sent you a PM
