Relocating to Houston TX...what about emissions?
Can't find the info on the web. What is the exemption on emissions? Age of car? Visual inspection of air pump and cats??? I have a 89 S4 without cats right now and my son has a 1980 with cats but no pump. Does anyone know before I plan a move?

Depends on the county. From dept safety , "Which vehicles are required to have the emissions test?
Vehicles registered in designated counties. Designated counties include: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson and El Paso counties.
Gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.
Vehicles 2 through 24 years old OR upon expiration of the two-year initial inspection sticker. ..."

Welcome to Texas! In the Houston area( Harris and all surrounding counties), the 80 would be exempt from emissions but would still require a yearly safety inspection. The 89 would be required to run on the chasis dyno for emissions and also the safety inspection. That said, a friend of mine had his 85 pass the dyno test with no cats (barely), while another friend's 87 failed the sniffer with no cats. Your 89 would become exempt in 2014.

Dean, best bet is to find one that only uses the sniffer and RPM's, I've got a great place up here that 'sorta caters' to our breed of cars and will do the right thing. I've also had a few people take cars to other places that will do it by speed, keeping it in drive, and they fail big time. Only to call and have me take it to our guys, and they pass with the proper paperwork.
It depends on the shop, the equipment, and care.
Most of them we tried before the current guys had no idea what they were looking at, much less what to look for. My '88 w/o any emissions equipment, X-pipe/high flow cats passed faster than most new Toyota's on the sniffer. (so they said, it was a 2 minute test)

Dean--
lawndart is correct for each of your rides.
county has nothing to do with it, year model does. county issues will not affect you as the area you are considering moving to is well within those listed previously.
