Default cleaning the engine?

For those who've been following along with my other valve cover et al thread I'm doing 4 projects at once; the valve cover seals/ tensioner pads/ cam chains, water bridge/water pump, the OPG and the a/c compressor and hoses.

The question today is I've started the projects so the car is on stands in the garage; what can i use to clean the bottom side of the engine, x-member, strg rack?

Current temps are between the freezing point and much lower as well my dogs shelter in the garage when its snowing heavy and very cold so enviro friendly products are needed (I'm not home right now so my SO is dealing with the situ at the mo).

TIA.

Not to hijack your thread Malcom but is there an "official detailing thread" on Rennlist? If not maybe some of these guys can chime in and start one.Simple Green does work pretty well too.

You can try WD 40 on any of the metal parts to help break things loose. If it isn't too grimey you can also use a rag and quick detailer although in cold temperatures it may not be too easy.

Best thing I tried is to spray simple green on the spots and scrub with brush and bucket with more simple green and water, use shop rags to wipe areas clean. It's messy ,,but once it's done routine cleaning is easy.

I will back Castrol super clean, spray it on, wait 5 min then roll it outside and pressurewash it off. Then roll it in to let it dry instead of freezing.

I'll visit the Concours forum from time to time but it seems to be guys detailing near new cars with expensive products. You know making like new cars look newer.
Not much to be learned there, I am more interested in making a 20 year old car look like a 2 year old car.

Steam Cleaner + simple green + liftbars + wading pool underneath. The steam will keep you nice and cozy.

PS- There's now a 'motorsports' version of Simple Green:

Thanks for the inputs.

Colin, which store carries the Castrol super clean in Canada? I'm currently in the Montreal area, could I bring it on a plane?

Malcolm,
Why would you want to be in montreal

I wouldnt recommend putting it in carry on luggage, and it wouldnt be allowed on a plane as there is too much in a bottle.

It can be purchased at Lordco, Napa, Canadian Tire, and any of those types of stores. Heck I think walmart carries it too.

Of all the Euro cities I worked in I love Montreal; best of both worlds IMHO and they 'had' the F1 GP.

I figured as much with airplane restrictions these days; I'll humbly ask the SO if she can visit the local NAPA store and ask if they carry it............the other stores would mean a trip to the big city.

thx much

be careful with the Castrol it will remove anything including paint and will etch aluminum. I like simple green for the heavy duty cleaning. I have kept many of dirtbikes looking new with simple green. Hose of heavy dirt then spray liberally with simple green kick back drink a pop or two rinse the bike and done.
