OK, this was the first full track day with my '82 Euro track project car.
It was on the new Palm Beach International Raceway course and it was awesome.
First lap out I left the pit right behind an older professionally setup 911 Carrera track car. After the warmup lap, I got right on him and waited patiently for the passing signal. I got the signal after turn 10 and zipped right by him. As I watch him in the mirror, he goes off course and crashes into the wall...
Found out later that his steering wheel came loose. He was allright, just some scratches on the left side of the car.
The new track is completely different then anything I have ever driven before. That track is probably 60 feet wide on the narrowest spot with several turns that seem to never end and exceed 180 degrees in turn. So there seem to be infinite ways to drive. It took me two sessions to figure it out, but then it was great.
On the last session I had to make way for a Cayman S, he was just faster on the long straight, but I passed a guy in a brand new Lotus. He seemed to struggle with the car, but in the solo group, a certain skill level would be expected. Are these cars that slow?
After it was all said and done, it was a great day with no failures. The suspension I got from Carl is great and the new gearbox does have LSD. The 265 Kumhos Victo Racers all around seem to be enough to give it a good grip.
Some problems showed, the right cam seal leaks and the gas tank leaks in left turns. I also could not set the timing to spec, but that's for another thread.
Unfortunately no 928's on the track out here anymore. Cameron does not have time to run his car and Constantine sold his. I think there are no track 928's anywhere close here.
I will fix the issues and will hopefully be back out in a month. My next projects will focus on safety equipment. I want to add a cage, fuel cell and fire system.
Any suggestions for improvements on the track car would be great.
cheers,
Sab

how much gas were you running. I never hit the track with more than a half tank (for races) for open track 20min sessions never more than 1/4 tank

I have the Carl-Koni setup on the "Black Widow" too!!!
Too funny!!
Careful its addicting out there.....expensive too..... As for not having many 928's to run with....thats an easy answer....move to California....lots of us around & the housing prices are CHEAP in norcal!!

The fuel should never leak out, even if the car is upside down. Running at a low fill level is a workaround, but if it leaks it's not safe. If it leaks in a left-hander it will leak if it is tipped over with 1/8 tank. We do NOT want to hear about that on the news!

Hi Sab,
Great news that at least someone in Florida is enjoying their 928 on these fine tracks we have here!
The more you get used to the car's limits and you improve your driving skills the more of a nuisance you'll become to other cars on the track! Then you start to compare the cost of them running their cars to your 928 and you'll be even more happy.
As to your gas leak problem, I used to run my 1986.5 track car at almost full levels with never a problem with leaking. I would make sure your gas tank is vented correctly and one place to check is the lines that attached to the charcoal cannister in the right front wheel well. When I gutted my track car I took out the cannister and plugged up the lines. I then read a bit about the gas tank vent system and went back and unplugged them. When I opened one of the lines it let out a "whoosh" sound. This was before hitting the track for the first time. Don't know if this is the cause but I would check the lines. The cannister is under the wheel well liner.
Keep the 928 flag flying at the track,
Constantine

Do you still have a 928 or you sold the last one as well?

Hi Sab,
I'm sure you'll check out the gas leak problem very well, just wanted to give another possibility in case there are no cracks found. Just strange that a few tracks cars are having this same problem and I did not have any...
Yes, we still have the 1989 928S4 auto, Velvet red metallic which is in the garage going through a motor mount, oil pan gasket, rebuilt torque tube, rebuilt transmission and a few other maintainence procedures. However we are thinking of letting it go after it's done.
Cheers,
Constantine

I had a cut in the expansion tank that returns fuel back to the tank. (when i was cutting stuff i nicked the tank). a couple of layers of JBweld did the trick.
I still have a little coming out of the gas cap when i have a half tank and havent seen a track car yet that doesnt do this. (but its very little )
remove the front fenderliner in the rear pass tire area and see if you can see any cracks or smell gas in there.
glad to hear you had some fun! any pics?
