Laughing along with this thread-! I am a stick guy, so much so, that I REMOVED the slushbox and UPGRADED to a 5-speed...so I agree with all the pro-sticks and say the car is faster ans MUCH more fun to drive as 5-speed. And I do not mean to disrespect you guys with hand-controls! Glad to see you here, and Alex Zanardi proves your points...

All that aside, a top fueler has a programmable CLUTCH and NO transmission, and Jim Hall's cars had modified Powerglide 2-speeds in them.

It still is a personal preference thing. Best to have one each, like Brian. For me, the stick is king...

On a 928, it wouldn't be too difficult combine a clutch with an automatic... Automatic shifting, with the clutch only used at stops. Only 4 gears, but it'd shift real quick!

There were some drag racing versions of Turbo400s that were like this. A custom input shaft to drive the transmission pump replaces the torque converter.

I'd love to see a 5 or 6 speed paddle shifter setup... would be awesome over the slushbox and easier/quicker than the manual too.

porken - your next mission!!

But manual owners go blind from playing with it too much!

Confucius Porschius say...
An automatic can be shifted like a manual but a manual cannot be shifted like an automatic!

I tried them...
After only a few months - I practically gave away two S4 auto's.
And replaced them with 5 spd keepers.

The only auto in the stable now - is a certified lemon....

Ken what I'd really like is the opposite - a manual with a small torque converter and a slow speed crawler mode... The only time I regret having a manual is in stop & go traffic - this would be a fantastic solution to that issue just a 'low' power torque converter with a high strength lock-up mode - say optionally operable in 1st & 2nd gears only - stay locked-up the rest of the time...

The "Automatic" method of starting out fast:

How to use:

Stand still, put lever in 2, this is 1st gear. Accelerate, put lever in 3, 2nd gear engages, then put the lever back into 2. This way the car stays in 2nd gear until you come to a stop, in which case it is in 1st gear again. If you don't put the lever back into 2, the car will eventually shift into 3rd gear. Accelerate, put lever into 3, car shifts into 3rd gear. Put lever in D the car shift into 4th gear.
<snip>

Vs. the manual method:

Stand still. Depress clutch, put shifter into 1st. This is 1st. Depress accelerator while releasing clutch. HOLD ON. When the dial on the right reaches the orange zone, depress clutch, shift into 2nd. This is 2nd. depress accelerator again while releasing the clutch. HOLD ON again!. Repeat for gears 3-5, until you reach the speed limit or until everything gets blurry around the edges (if you're on a track.)

Depress accelerator while releasing clutch. When the dial on the right reaches the orange zone, depress clutch, shift into 2nd.
This cannot be good for the gearbox or motor.

Hope that rpm limiter is working

I must admit I do it all the time, and can't find the rev limiter on the '85 Euro

It may not be good for any of them them - but they all take it well!

Depends on how much power you have, letting the clutch fully engage (3rd pedal up all the way) before stomping on the right pedal may enhance clutch longevity. It may.

I like both. I prefer autos in the 928. The performance is still great, and you can drink a coke while you drive. The sloppy shifter, and leg workout don't appeal to me when I hit traffic (which everyone here is bound to do. These damn people keep multiplying). On a track? Manual gets the nod. But only there. Replacing clutches irritates me.
My wife likes to "nap" in my lap when we cruise our shark...
The auto for the win!

The automatic method: put lever in D, stomp on the gas. HOLD ON
