I pulled the board and fortunately, it was unmolested, both front and back (no jumpers or melted wires). The only wire in the Q connector that had a splice was the yellow wire, at position 13. I cut the junk off - it was a melted mess with a relay attached to it (Bosch, but certainly not stock!). I'll splice the yellow wire back together tomorrow.
The starter is new as of last summer - wonder if this is what killed the old one? I also am adding a new starter relay. I have given the board a thorough R&R too. My fuse block at 26-30 was melted from a bad fog light situation 2 years ago. I had a spare panel from an 86, so I was able to carefully repair mine with parts from the spare. Tricky job - you really need to pay attention to every item under the cover of those fuse blocks, and use fine picks to take apart the various pieces. Anyway, this was a job I've been wanting to get to for quite some time (Thanks for the great archival stuff from Dave Pirtle and Alan Moore)
I have no idea at this point what else that bundle of renegade wires was for. I also don't know if I've solved my no start problem yet either. I'll get it all back together over the next few days, clean the grounds and try again. I replaced the relays for the fuel pump and the ignition as well. We'll see!

Yikes!!!
I meant Dave Anderson's Excellent write up! (i.e., you. Note to mods - we need a "red face" smiley)
For those that don't know what I'm talking about, just click on the link under Dave A's signature and you'll find a place more enchanting than Oz Dave's site is the Sharkskin site, and John Pirtle's site is full of email keepers, well organized. There are a few folks in our community who should be in the Shark Hall of Fame, like Dave, John, Greg Nichols, most recently Dwayne, and a number of others. Without the work that you guys have done, I'm screwed
Anyway, I've had your write-ups on my favorites for years.
Here's my panel after the R&R; everything cleaned and coated, including relays:

Someone needs to make a T-Shirt with Ed's last picture.
Even seasoned telephone operators from days or yore will run in terror from that
plate of grey spaghetti.

Any charred or loose sockets on your CE board?
My starter relay had a charred socket that needed fixing.

Hi Ernest - the #30 fuse slot for the foglight was completely melted down. I had to repair that. A couple other fuse slots showed signs of mild past charring, so I fixed those too. Everything else was good to go. At least on the CE panel. Hang tight, I have another picture coming shortly with additional questions for our electric guru's!

Okay, here are a couple of additional pics of what I found behind the CE panel. There are two different fused splices coming off different points of the wire harness. One is spliced off the bundle that contains the green wire for the O2 sensor, but it isn't tapped into the green wire itself. This splice then jumps over to another fused splice, that goes back into one of the wire bundles on the other side of the footwell, near the center stack. Are these stock? What could they be for if not stock? Thanks again all.

The two small in-line fuses appear to be the stock fuses for the door locks.

If you have the Jim Morehouse CD set, I think that there is a training booklet on the electrical system included...

I was just ribbin', Ed. As Wally says, those two fuse holders seem like they ought to be there... IIRC I saw them on an 86.5 that I had the CE panel out of. The electrical tape doesn't seem right though, might want to investigate that.
