Default Best protection for car while parked at work.

I use my car as a daily driver; just can't seem to leave it in the garage. The car is in great shape (I believe the POs had always garaged it) but there's no protection for it at work. In the summer it will be parked in full sun with temps ranging ranging from 85-100 from about June to Sept. I'm worried that the constant on again off again car cover will just scratch the paint unless the car is kept completely clean all the time. Should I just go with a windshield reflector to protect the dash or is a car cover the best bet? If so, any recommendations on covers? It would mainly be for sun protection but of course it will rain occasionally.

I would cover it with a UV proof cover. I had a NOAH cover but there are others. A good one may run 200 dollars but worth it. The good out weights the bad when it comes to covers just keep in mind all it will protect against is UV...not water it the cars leaks. Water proof is bad. Rainy days I would leave the cover off.

Oh - I missed the mainly for Sun...
I thought you meant another kind of protection and was about to suggest....

I used a car cover while in the Keys - the cover chafing in 10-15 knts of wind are what scratched the paint.

I did this for a while, until I phased it out. I moved to a house that had garage space to park in, and there was a parking garage at work. Then I changed jobs and was back to parking outside in the sun, until they built a parking garage.

The key is keeping the car spotless. Get a California Car Duster and dust the car before putting the cover on. The wax in the duster will streak if the paint is too hot, but it beats scratches.

The extreme temperature changes alone will crack the dash and pod sooner or later. Parking a 928 in the direct, hot sun is a recipe for disaster when it comes to the interior.

But there are some great guys in Michigan and Texas, who will be happy to fix the damage...

928 Specialists had these nifty silver sunshades for all windows, but I don't think they are still available. If they are, those might be a good and easy thing to use.

Another option are those solar fans for the window, that blow the hot air out. Or leave the sunroof open just enough to let hot air out, but not sun in (providing your parking area is safe).

Thanks everyone, all good suggestions. Still in a bit of a quandary; better to risk the interior with the heat or risk the exterior by putting on a cover that may scratch the paint...

Does anyone have any opinions on how much the direct sun actually affects the paint job?

The only protection your car needs... The Trunk Monkey.

If you're worried mostly about the dash, get a carpeted dash and pod cover along with a fold up window screen. Finally tint the back 3 windows.

That depends on a few factors, mainly how dark and how close to "burgundy" your paint is. In my experience, nothing fades faster than burgundy and red tones.

FWIW I've had two different 928 daily driver's since 1994 (an 89 and now a 93). Both are parked at work outside in the Texas sun. I've always had the side and rear windows tinted and used just a windshield shade on the inside whenever parked. I also open the sunroof about an inch and the windows about half inch to let the hot air escape. Neither dash ever had a single crack (both vinyl), and the rear side panels (again vinyl) had no warps or degradation.

A car cover will eventually scratch the paint.

A car cover, cracking the windows/sunroof a little and if no car cover then 100% occlusive window shades. 928 Specialists used to sell them but no longer. There's niche market there for someone! I'm glad I bought a set.

If you use it as a daily driver, it's going to get banged around just from regular wear and tear. Park it in the garage.

Rear quarter window shades to avoid the warpage and a windsheild shade at minimum.

Covers work best if you are diligent about keeping the car clean, otherwise you will end up cleaning the cover often and will eventually damage it and the car.
