Mega Squirt conversion

Mega Squirt conversion
Hi all, I finished assembling my megasquirt this weekend. I am going to replace the LH and ignition in my 1984 euro 928. The MS is going to handle the fuel and ignition will be handled through MS via a Ford edis-8 set up, no more distributors. I know other rennlisters have gone this route and have been successful so I figured I will have a go at it. I have already converted a carbureted motorcycle to MS with very good results. My main reason for doing this is I have a failing MAF and the cost of replacement is pretty close to installing MS and edis. I know I will spend more but I will have total control over the fuel and ignition. I am using a MSII version 3.0 board. I bought the kit from www.diyautotune.com it took two weekends to assemble the MS. If one wanted to they can buy a surface mount version of the MSII from diy for additional money but I like to put stuff together so I went for the kit. On big benefit of converting to MS and edis is you will replace almost all of the 20+ year old wiring harness in the process of the install. I will document the conversion as I go. For starters here is a pic of the MS and screen shot of megatune the free tuning software. Oh also the MS is 100% user configurable and its code is 100% open to modification if you have the skills and need to do so.
The green board to the right is the stimulator which plugs into where the main engine harness would plug into. The stimulator simulates and sends the appropriate signals to MS for testing and learning the tuning software. This allows you to test the MS on the bench and learn the megatune software.

look forward to seeing how it turns out. Lizard (Colin) has done the same with his 86 motored, euro bodied 928..check out his thread.

I am thinking of going this route with my track car so I will be watching closely.

Dan,
I have seriously considered it for the 85/86, and 87+ cars.
But, it is at the same time such a DIY system that I feel it is beinificial to those who would want to use it to do it themselves. The reading for it makes no real sence till you get one which overwhelms everyone to start. Once you get it though it becomes alot easier.
To the OP,
I do have an ign map which seems to work fairly well on the 928 engines, and if you need help setting it up I can give you a good baseline as to do to get up and running.
With having the 16V things are alittle different, but the basics will be close.
do you have the old style fuse panel, or the newer panel with spade style fuses?

when I get to the point of starting I may take you up on the offer of your ignition map. Yes I do have the old style fuses does this pose any problem that you came across?
I agree with your point about this being such a DIY conversion that unless you put it together yourself that you could get very lost in all the info.
After doing my motorcycle conversion I definately learned a ton about how a modern day EFI system works.
thanks

Sam,
I was more inquiring about what fusepanel you had as if you had the spade fuse panel, I could have told you how to wire up the plug for that and saved you alot of time with wiring.

When you did your tuning how much if any did you use the autotune? When I did my motorcycle conversion it was a straight Alpha-N deal and I did not have a good way to mount a laptop for autotune so I have never used autotune. If you have any input on autotune I would be interested.

I started my 1983s running on Megasquirt from DIY and started right up. Of course the LC1 took a crap on me and I had to send it back to Innovative. I should have the LC1 back next week and will start the tuning.

Ok moving along on the MS conversion. I have a new wiring harness, new gm coolant and air temp sensors with pigtails, and a new stepper style IAC motor which I am machining a valve to fit exactly where the stock bi metal wire valve fits. i have one more piece to machine but a picture of the progress is below. The great part about this is it will use the stock hoses so it wil not look out of place. Since this is a stepper style IAC it will make the engine start cold and idle down just like any modern setup.

Wildwest do you really need the aux start air valve with MS? I mean you should be able to eliminate the whole start circuit. During cold start MS provide enough fuel for start. What injectors are you using? Should consider high ohm aftermarket.
