Going back and forth at 3-points it shows .006 inches so I guess I'm good to go.

you would want to move the flywheel fully aftn then tighten the front pinch bolt. this will give it more room to move forward.
Also note the front bolt is the last one to tighten , do the rear bolt first

Hi Bill,

The circlip, bearing and washers were stopped being installed sometime in MY 1984, according to the WSMs. 85s and later should not have them unless someone installed them later and as you know only for the older 25mm constant diameter driveshafts. The newer 28mm necked down drive shafts don't have the necessary front area on the drive shaft to install them. Wonder why...

As far as your experiences with just relieving the tension every so often, consider yourself fortunate. Others have not been so lucky.

Cheers,
Constantine

True the shaft does not go all the way out to attach a clip. I guess a check every 10 K would be a good plan.
Thanks for the help!

Eh. This is probably the 10th time I've gotten the changeover date wrong. Bad memory. It's in the 85 service info guide, so I keep remembering it as 85. Didn't the 25mm shaft with groove continue for a few years after the shims were discontinued? [EDIT: I see mention of the changeover from 25 to 28mm shaft in 89 service guide].

My '81 had shims/circlip, and the flexplate still moved when I released the pinch bolt (for the first time, just before I sold it ).

I think it's torque that's a factor, not HP. My '81 was up to ~270 rwtq (but only ~210 rwhp).

AFAIK, all 25mm shafts have a circlip groove.

Hi Bill and Ken,

Yes, Porsche kept using the 25mm drive shaft for awhile longer than 1984 but discontinued the use of the circlip, washers and bearing. Your right Ken, all 25mm drive shafts have the groove and the extended portion.

Yes, torque is the factor and is the reason why Porsche went to the thicker 28mm drive shaft. Surprisingly they did not change the couplers at the front and rear flexplates which meant they had to neck down the 28mm shaft, introducing a shear point in the drive shaft. And it still did not control the pull out problem at the front.

Cheers,
Constantine
